Caregiver Illness- If the Caregiver is Sick, Who Takes Care of Mom?

You probably know that a caregiver does a lot of giving and not very much taking. When you are on the go day in and day out you are even more likely to get sick.

Especially stress-related sickness can creep in and take over, making you tired and feeling ill.

Having a back-up plan in mind before you get sick is the best scenario. This will ensure someone will be readily available to take care of Mom for you."

What to do before you get sick:

Have a plan in place. Plan for what you would need on a short-term basis until you are better. Also plan for what would happen to Mom and who would take care of her if you become very ill on a longer-term basis.

Your plan should include:

  • A list of names and phone numbers of people who are ready, willing and available to step in and take over should you need them. This includes an “emergency list” of people who could come quickly if needed; for example in the middle of the night.
  • Names and phone numbers of health care agencies that you have checked out and screened in advance.
  • A list of your mom’s medications, when they need to be given, etc.
  • A list of your mom’s doctors’ names,
