Each year, millions of older adults experience falls—and many of these accidents can be prevented with simple changes at home. Fall Prevention Awareness Week is the perfect time to remind ourselves of the small steps that can make a big difference in keeping our loved ones safe and independent.

Here are the top 5 tips to help prevent falls at home for seniors:

1. Remove Tripping Hazards

Loose rugs, electrical cords, clutter, and uneven flooring are some of the most common causes of falls. Take a walk through the home and clear pathways, secure rugs with non-slip backing, and keep frequently used items within easy reach to avoid unnecessary stretching or bending.

2. Install Grab Bars and Handrails

Bathrooms and stairways are high-risk areas for falls. Installing sturdy grab bars near toilets, tubs, and showers, as well as secure handrails along stairways and hallways, gives seniors the support they need to move safely and confidently.

3. Choose Proper Footwear

Shoes with non-slip soles, good support, and a snug fit can help reduce the risk of slipping. Avoid slippers, flip-flops, or shoes with smooth bottoms that may slide on floors. Even indoors, it’s best to wear well-fitted shoes instead of socks alone.

4. Improve Lighting

Good lighting helps seniors see obstacles before they become a hazard. Add night lights in hallways, bathrooms, and bedrooms to make it easier to navigate during the night. Ensure that commonly used areas have bright, even lighting without harsh glares or shadows.

5. Stay on Top of Health Checkups

Sometimes the risk of falling comes from less obvious sources like vision problems, balance issues, or medication side effects. Regular checkups—including vision and hearing exams—can identify health-related risks early. Discuss medications with a healthcare provider to be aware of possible dizziness or drowsiness.
