What Is National Stroke Awareness Month?
National Stroke Awareness Month was established to educate the public on stroke symptoms, encourage immediate medical attention, and promote support for survivors and caregivers. Each year, nearly 800,000 people in the U.S. experience a stroke. With greater awareness and access to care, many of these strokes can be treated or even prevented.
How to Recognize a Stroke FAST
When it comes to stroke, every second counts. Rapid recognition and response can reduce the risk of severe brain damage or death. The F.A.S.T. acronym is a quick way to remember the most common warning signs:
-
F – Face drooping: One side of the face may be numb or droop. Ask the person to smile.
-
A – Arm weakness: Can the person raise both arms? Does one drift downward?
-
S – Speech difficulty: Is their speech slurred or hard to understand?
-
T – Time to call 911: If someone shows any of these signs, call emergency services immediately.
Delaying treatment can cost precious time—and lives.
Life After Stroke: Challenges Survivors Face
Surviving a stroke is just the beginning. Many individuals face a long road to recovery that includes:
-
Physical impairments, such as paralysis or mobility issues
-
Cognitive difficulties, including memory loss or speech challenges
-
Emotional health struggles, like depression or anxiety
-
Lifestyle adjustments, often requiring help with daily activities
This journey can be overwhelming, but stroke recovery is possible—especially with the right support system in place.
