Celebrate National Time Management Month by Cleaning up Your Schedule

Slow Down for a Minute

This may seem contrary to what you're trying to do, but slow down for a little bit. Often you're running too hard to get everything done and you can't see the forest for the trees. So taking even half an hour to sit down and to figure your situation out is essential.

Get a Calendar, if You Don't Have One

If you don't already have a calendar, you might want to get one. Studies have proven that writing things down helps your brain to process them better and to hang onto them. Often when you're feeling pressed for time, you're trying to remember too many things all at once. Writing it down gets it out of your head, but not out of your memory. If you need reminders, electronic calendars can't be beat.

Write Down Everything You Have to Do

Once you know what sort of calendar system you're going to use, the next step is to write down all of your commitments and appointments. The reason for this is you want to see all in one place everything that you have to do. Even if it's a commitment you have only once a month, write it down because you have to fit everything into your schedule.

Prioritize Your List

The next step is to look at your entire list and determine which items are the highest priorities and which ones fall farther down the list. You may discover during this process that you've got multiple conflicting priorities, which is often where the feeling that you don't have any time comes from.

Create Some Margin for Yourself

With your priorities outlined, you can start to take some steps to make room in your life. You're going to see spots in which you can delegate tasks and responsibilities to other people, such as senior care providers or other family members. As you start to feel the benefits of delegating, you're going to be better able to keep up with what needs to happen when.

Fixing your time management issues doesn't have to be as difficult as you think. If you're still having trouble, then go back to the beginning and slow yourself down for a minute. That gives you room to think.
