About Maureen: Caregiver, Animal Lover, and Community Member
Maureen lives in Kalkaska with her husband, Edward (Ed), and their three beloved dogs:
- Cash, a Brittany
- Bolivar, a male Havanese
- Baylee, a female Havanese
Her love for animals and compassion for others play a big role in her approach to caregiving.
How Maureen Began Her Career in Home Health Care
Maureen’s healthcare journey started in a unique and meaningful way—with a therapy dog. After training one of her dogs to become a certified therapy dog, she began volunteering at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Long Term Care facility.
At the time, she was searching for a new career closer to home after moving to Kalkaska. Volunteering sparked a love for working with seniors, and when she learned the facility would train her as a Certified Nursing Assistant, her path in healthcare officially began.
Today at BrightStar Care, Maureen provides:
- Comfort and personal care
- Home care services
- Companionship and emotional support
One client even refers to her and his other caregivers as his “people,” a testament to the trust and connection Maureen builds every day.
Why Maureen Loves Being a Home Care Caregiver
When asked what she enjoys most, Maureen didn’t hesitate: building relationships.
“In-home care allows you to be on a personal level with people,” she explains. “In a facility, you’re stretched thin with many people depending on you at once. The one-on-one time in home-health care is very special.”
Her compassion, patience, and personal connection are what make her an outstanding BrightStar caregiver.
Where Maureen Grew Up and What Brought Her to Kalkaska
Maureen grew up in Mesick, in Northern Lower Michigan. She eventually moved to Kalkaska to be with her now-husband, who owned a business there. Her love for community and family continues to shape her work and relationships.
Fun Facts About Maureen
Most people don’t know that Maureen:
- Grew up on a dairy farm, learning how to milk cows by hand and bale hay
- Is the oldest of seven children
- Helped care for her naturally conceived triplet siblings, born when she was just 12
These experiences helped shape her strong work ethic and nurturing personality.
