At BrightStar Care of Northern Michigan, our caregivers do much more than provide physical assistance. They build relationships, offer companionship, support families, and help clients remain comfortable and connected in the place they call home.
This month, we’re proud to spotlight Tamara Irwin, who has been part of the BrightStar Care team since August 2024. With a background in assisted living and a genuine passion for helping others, Tamara has found that one-on-one, in-home care allows her to build meaningful relationships with the people she serves.
Getting to Know Tamara
Tamara was born and raised in Greenville, Michigan, and now calls Coopersville home. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time outdoors—especially fishing. She recently purchased a new boat and loves spending time on the water. She also enjoys bowling, although she admits it has been a while since she has hit the lanes!
Family is another important part of Tamara’s life. She is a mother of one son and three daughters and a grandmother to three grandchildren—two boys and a girl.
When she isn't caring for clients or enjoying time with her family, Tamara has a bucket-list adventure in mind: traveling out West by camper. Rather than rushing from destination to destination, she would love to take her time exploring the westernmost states and experiencing everything along the way.
Why Tamara Chose In-Home Care
Tamara has experience working in assisted living, but eventually found the environment of facilities wasn't the right fit for her. She discovered that in-home care offered something she especially valued: the opportunity to provide individualized, one-on-one attention.
For Tamara, that personal connection is one of the most rewarding parts of being a caregiver.
"Relationships are what I most enjoy about the care I provided," she says. "Being welcomed into the home and family is so nice and warm."
Unlike a setting where caregivers may need to divide their attention among many residents, in-home caregiving allows caregivers to focus directly on the individual in front of them. That one-on-one time creates opportunities not only to provide physical assistance, but also to listen, talk, laugh, and simply be present.
What Makes Great In-Home Care?
When asked what makes great in-home care, Tamara points to two important elements: communication and physical care.
While providing safe and compassionate hands-on care is an essential part of a caregiver's role, Tamara believes communication is just as important.
Taking the time to talk with clients helps caregivers understand their needs, preferences, concerns, and personalities. Those conversations can turn a routine visit into an opportunity for genuine connection.
Tamara also hopes more people will understand the full scope of professional caregiving.
"Caregiving is so much more than the physical aspects of care," she explains. "It's the mental and emotional aspects as well."
A professional caregiver may help with daily activities and personal care, but they can also provide companionship, reassurance, encouragement, and a familiar presence during challenging times.
Building Relationships With Clients and Families
For Tamara, the relationships she develops with clients and their families are the most rewarding part of her work.
She especially appreciates the opportunity to provide care and comfort within the client's own home. Being in a familiar environment can allow clients to maintain a sense of connection to their routines, family, and community.
Tamara has seen how in-home care can also support family relationships. When a professional caregiver helps with day-to-day care, family members can spend more time simply being family rather than having every interaction centered around caregiving responsibilities.
That personal connection is one of the things that makes in-home care such a meaningful option for individuals and families in Northern Michigan.
Considering a Career in Home Care?
For someone considering becoming a caregiver, Tamara says the relationships are one of the greatest benefits of the job.
"You get to meet people, love them and care for them where they are."
A career in home care can be an opportunity to make a direct difference in someone's everyday life while developing meaningful connections with clients and their families. For caregivers who enjoy one-on-one interaction and want to provide personalized support, in-home caregiving can be a rewarding career path.
At BrightStar Care of Northern Michigan, our caregivers play an essential role in helping clients receive compassionate care and support in the comfort of home.
