As the flowers bloom and Northern Michigan begins to thaw from a long winter, May offers a fresh sense of renewal. For us at BrightStar Care of Northern Michigan, it’s also a month filled with gratitude, reflection, and celebration. From honoring the nurses who are the heartbeat of our care, to uplifting older adults and raising awareness about mental health, May reminds us why home care matters—now more than ever.
Honoring the Heart of Home Care: Nurses Week (May 6-12)
This month, we proudly celebrated National Nurses Week, a time to recognize the compassionate, skilled, and resilient nurses who travel from home to home—often down dirt roads, through unpredictable weather, and into the lives of patients who depend on their expertise.
Our home health nurses don’t just deliver medical care. They bring dignity, trust, and human connection into every room they enter. Whether managing chronic conditions, offering end-of-life support, or providing oversite to personal care, their dedication is unmatched.
“I love home care because it allows me to take care of people in their happy place! You really get to know your patients on a more personal level when you visit them in their home.” -Kari E., RN
Our celebration for our nursing team included a free CEU offering along with thank you gifts. Our gratitude is year-round.
Celebrating Older Americans Month
May is also Older Americans Month, and this year’s theme is “Powered by Connection.” At BrightStar Care of Northern Michigan, we believe aging in place should never mean aging alone. Our caregivers and nurses are not only a source of care, but they’re also a source of companionship, reassurance, and empowerment.
We support our clients’ independence through personalized care plans, assistance with activities of daily living, and companionship. Our goal is to bring joy to our clients through listening, interacting, and making memories. Sometimes simply sharing a story over coffee or tea can be all someone needs to bring a smile to their face and joy to their day.
This month, we invite families to reflect on the older adults in their lives—their wisdom, stories, and quiet strength—and to ensure those loved ones feel seen, heard, and supported.
Spring into Wellness: Tips for a Healthy Season at Home
As the weather warms up, now is the perfect time to refresh home routines and promote wellness for those we serve. Here are a few springtime tips for older adults and caregivers:
- Stay hydrated—Warmer temps require more fluids
- Soak up the sunshine—Even 10 minutes outside can boost mood and vitamin D
- Review home safety—Clear walkways, check railings, and remove fall hazards
- Eat fresh—Incorporate local produce and lighter meals when possible
- Move a little every day—Gentle stretches or a walk around the yard go a long way

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, reminding us that emotional and psychological well-being are just as important as physical health. This is especially true for:
- Seniors coping with isolation, grief, or cognitive decline
- Family caregivers facing burnout and stress
- Our own staff, who give so much of themselves each day
At BrightStar Care of Northern Michigan, we support mental health through caregiver respite services, offering resources, and by simply listening with compassion. Small conversations often lead to big healing.
If you or someone you love is struggling, know that help is available. You are not alone.
