But behind every caregiver and nurse is a strong support system — the office team who makes sure everything runs smoothly. From scheduling to payroll, from family communication to big-picture planning, these individuals keep our mission moving forward. That’s why we’re introducing a small but meaningful change: occasionally, instead of featuring a caregiver, we’ll shine the spotlight on an outstanding office employee.
This month, we’re honored to feature John Zimmerman, Owner of BrightStar Care of Northern Michigan.
Meet John Zimmerman
Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is John Zimmerman. I’m married to Sharon — we’ve been together for 47 years (and they said it wouldn’t last!). We share our home with our two pets, Willow and Lucy.
How did you start the business?
When my position as a pharmaceutical representative was being downsized, I began exploring new opportunities through a franchise broker. We looked at multiple businesses, and home care stood out as the field where I felt most comfortable and could make the biggest impact.
What are your primary duties?
I handle administrative responsibilities, sales, marketing, payroll — and, of course, paying the bills.
What is your favorite part of the job, and what is your “why”?
I love knowing that we are making life more enjoyable for our clients, bringing peace of mind to families, and providing quality jobs for our staff.
Where did you grow up, and what brought you to your current city?
I grew up in central Illinois. My career as a pharmaceutical representative eventually transferred me to this area, and I’ve been here ever since.
What is a fun fact about you that may surprise people?
I actually, really enjoy yard work.
If you could be any cartoon character or superhero, who would you be?
Captain America. He’s strong, smart, and good looking. Honestly, he reminds me of myself.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?
Worry about yourself, not the other guy.
