Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults—but the good news is that most falls can be prevented. With a few simple changes and consistent awareness, you can greatly reduce the risk of falls at home and help keep yourself or a loved one safe and independent.
This week is Fall Prevention Awareness Week, and at BrightStar Care, we’re highlighting easy, practical steps families can take to make their homes safer.
Here are some general ways to reduce fall risks at home:
Clear Clutter and Hazards
Keep walkways free of cords, throw rugs, and other tripping hazards. Good lighting—especially at night—can also make a big difference.
Support Balance and Strength
Encourage daily activity to keep muscles strong and improve balance. Even simple exercises or short walks can help reduce fall risks.
Use Assistive Devices Wisely
Grab bars in the bathroom, handrails on both sides of stairs, and non-slip mats can all provide extra stability. Don’t wait until after a fall to add these helpful tools.
Stay on Top of Health Needs
Regular vision and hearing checks, along with reviewing medications with a healthcare provider, can help prevent dizziness or balance issues that contribute to falls.
Partner in Prevention
Families don’t have to do this alone. Home health aides and nurses can help monitor safety, encourage safe mobility, and provide peace of mind for both clients and loved ones.
Together, we can help reduce falls and support safer, more independent living at home.
