24-Hour and Live-In Care in Plano TX
Some care needs do not fit neatly into a daily schedule. When a loved one requires consistent supervision around the clock — due to advanced dementia, high fall risk, complex medical needs, or the late stages of a serious illness — BrightStar Care of Plano provides Joint Commission Accredited, Registered Nurse-supervised 24-hour and live-in home care throughout Plano, Allen, McKinney, Fairview, and all of Collin County. We bring the full-time care and clinical oversight that these situations demand, while keeping your loved one in the home they know and love.
24-Hour Care vs. Live-In Care — Understanding the Difference
24-hour care uses rotating shifts of caregivers — typically three 8-hour shifts or two 12-hour shifts — to ensure that an awake, alert caregiver is present and available at all times. This is the appropriate model for clients who require active monitoring throughout the night, who have unpredictable behaviors (such as nighttime wandering in advanced dementia), or who have skilled nursing needs that may arise at any hour. 24-hour care is more expensive than live-in care but provides uninterrupted, awake coverage.
Live-in care places a caregiver in the home on a shared-day basis — typically one caregiver for multiple days — with the caregiver sleeping at the home but available for nighttime needs. Live-in care is appropriate for clients who sleep reasonably through the night and need support primarily during waking hours, with caregiver availability for nighttime emergencies. Live-in care is generally less expensive and may be a good fit for clients who are stable and do not require continuous nighttime monitoring.
BrightStar Care's Registered Nurse will help your family determine which model is appropriate for your loved one's clinical needs and family circumstances.
When 24-Hour Care Is Needed
24-hour care is typically indicated for clients who:
- Have advanced Alzheimer's or dementia with nighttime wandering or sundowning behaviors
- Have high fall risk and history of nighttime falls
- Require skilled nursing interventions at unpredictable times (ventilator management, seizure management, complex wound care)
- Are in the advanced stages of ALS, COPD, CHF, cancer, or other progressive conditions
- Have recently returned home from a hospital or skilled nursing facility and require continuous monitoring during the transition
- Are enrolled in hospice and require continuous comfort care and family support
24-Hour and Live-In Care Services
- Continuous caregiver presence — awake overnight (24-hour) or on-call overnight (live-in)
- Full personal care — bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, repositioning
- Medication management around the clock
- Meal preparation — breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks
- Light housekeeping and laundry
- Companionship and cognitive engagement during waking hours
- Skilled nursing visits layered on top of caregiver coverage as clinically needed
- Registered Nurse supervision of all caregivers — regular home visits and care plan updates
- Family communication and care coordination
24-Hour Care as an Alternative to Nursing Home Placement
For many Collin County families, 24-hour in-home care is a meaningful alternative to nursing home or memory care facility placement — allowing the client to remain in familiar surroundings, maintain relationships with family and community, and receive individualized attention that institutional settings cannot provide. BrightStar Care's care coordinators work with families to evaluate the cost, clinical appropriateness, and feasibility of 24-hour home care versus placement, helping families make informed decisions.
