This October, communities throughout Coastal Los Angeles and Conejo Valley have an opportunity to come together for the Alzheimer’s walks on October 10 and October 17. These events are more than a walk around a local route. They are moments for families, caregivers, friends, healthcare professionals, and neighbors to stand beside people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Walk at Your Own Pace

Families can participate in whatever way feels comfortable. Attend the ceremony, walk part of the route, take a team photo, or simply come together to show support. For a loved one living with dementia, plan around their comfort, energy level, mobility, and usual routine.

Every step—and every show of support—helps remind families affected by Alzheimer’s disease that they are not alone.

Why Alzheimer’s Walks Matter

Alzheimer’s disease affects far more than the individual who receives a diagnosis. It also affects spouses, adult children, grandchildren, friends, and caregivers. Families often adjust their routines, homes, responsibilities, and expectations as a loved one’s memory and abilities change.

A local walk gives people a chance to visibly show that they care. Participants may walk in honor of a parent, spouse, grandparent, friend, client, or community member. Some walk in memory of someone they have lost. Others walk because they are currently helping a loved one live safely and meaningfully with dementia.

The simple act of walking beside others can be powerful. It creates a sense of belonging and helps reduce the loneliness that many caregivers and families experience.

Raising Awareness Through Community

Alzheimer’s awareness is important because early changes in memory, judgment, communication, and daily functioning should not be ignored. While occasional forgetfulness can happen to anyone, ongoing or worsening cognitive changes deserve attention from a healthcare professional.

Events like the October walks help make these conversations more open. They encourage families to learn the signs of dementia, seek professional guidance, and explore care options before a situation becomes urgent.

Early Support Can Make a Difference

Families do not need to wait for a crisis to seek help. Asking for support early can make daily life more manageable and help a loved one remain comfortable in familiar surroundings.

In-home care can provide practical assistance while helping preserve routines and dignity. Depending on a family’s needs, support may include companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, transportation, personal care assistance, mobility support, and meaningful engagement.

BrightStar Care of Conejo Valley provides personalized in-home Alzheimer’s and dementia care, recognizing that memory-care needs vary from person to person.

Take a Step Toward Hope This October

The Alzheimer’s walks on October are invitations to come together as a community. They offer families a way to honor loved ones, recognize caregivers, raise awareness, and show that people affected by Alzheimer’s disease are not alone.

If you are attending, consider inviting friends, relatives, coworkers, or neighbors to join your team. If you cannot attend, you can still help by sharing event information, making a donation, encouraging a caregiver, or starting a compassionate conversation about memory care.

And if your family is navigating Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia at home, know that help is available. Asking for support is not giving up independence. It is often a meaningful way to protect safety, reduce caregiver stress, and help a loved one continue living with dignity in familiar surroundings.

This October, let every step be a reminder that awareness leads to understanding, understanding leads to support, and support can change a family’s journey.
