September is here, bringing a refreshing shift in the Central Florida air and a brand new season of activities! At BrightStar Care of Seminole County, we believe that staying active, engaged, and social is a vital part of a "Life Care" approach to aging. The best part? Enriching your life doesn't have to empty your wallet.

This month, we’ve rounded up the best free and low-cost activities available right here in Seminole County, designed for seniors to enjoy companionship, fitness, and fun as we welcome the autumn season.

Your September Go-To Guide for Free Senior Fun

Seminole County's local cities and parks departments are wonderful resources for engaging senior programming. Here are some of the fantastic opportunities you or your loved one can enjoy this month:

1. Stay Active with Free Fitness Classes

Regular physical activity is key to maintaining mobility and energy. Many local senior centers offer free or minimal-cost exercise classes focused on senior-friendly movement.

Sanford Senior Center (401 E. Seminole Blvd.):
  • Senior Fitness: Enjoy movement and light exercise on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00 AM.
  • Chair Yoga: A wonderful way to build flexibility and balance, typically offered on Tuesdays at 11:00 AM.
  • Yoga: Available on Thursdays at 10:30 AM.
Casselberry Recreation Center (200 N. Triplet Lake Dr.):
  • Check their calendar for popular recurring programs like Chairobics and Chair Yoga—perfect for seniors seeking gentle, strengthening movement.

2. Socialize with Games & Cards

A little friendly competition is great for cognitive health! Gather with friends old and new at local senior centers for free organized game sessions:

Sanford Senior Center:
  • Billiards/Pool Tables: Open for free play all day, Monday through Friday (8:00 AM – 4:00 PM).
  • Bingo: A classic, social favorite typically held every Friday at 1:00 PM.
  • Bridge & Other Card Games: Check their schedule for various card groups like Bridge and Hand, Knee, and Foot.
• Casselberry Recreation Center:
  • Hosts sessions for Bingo and various card games like Bridge and Hand & Foot.

3. Discover the Beauty of Seminole County Parks

The transition to fall is the best time to enjoy Florida’s beautiful outdoor spaces before the weather gets too cool. Entry to the following natural areas is always free (note: some may have small fees for special events or rentals):

Wekiwa Springs State Park (Apopka): While there is a small fee for vehicle entry to the main spring area, you can still enjoy several free activities once inside or seek out nearby free trail access points.
  • Birding & Wildlife Viewing: The park is part of the Great Florida Birding & Wildlife Trail. Grab a park map and enjoy easy, flat trails perfect for spotting seasonal wildlife.
  • Hiking/Walking: Trails range in length and are perfect for a refreshing morning walk. Always bring water and wear appropriate shoes.
Local City Parks: Enjoy a free, relaxing afternoon at a local community park for a picnic or a light stroll.
  • Seminole City Park
  • Reiter Park (Longwood)
  • Central Park (Winter Park/Maitland, just outside Seminole County)

4. Free Community & Special Events

Keep an eye on city calendars for special one-off events that are often free for seniors:

  • Older Adult Fall Prevention Program (Oviedo): The City of Oviedo often hosts free, interactive programs with the Florida Health Department focusing on fall prevention for adults aged 55 and older. Be sure to call ahead for dates and to RSVP!
  • Sanford Civic Center & Lake Mary Events: Check the city event pages for free outdoor concerts, seasonal markets, or cultural performances that often pop up in September.
