October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize and support individuals affected by breast cancer, breast cancer survivors, and the family members and friends who stand beside them.

For someone going through treatment, recovering from surgery, or returning home after a hospital stay, everyday activities can sometimes become more challenging. At BrightStar Care of The Monterey Peninsula, our local care team provides personalized in-home care and skilled nursing services designed to help individuals remain comfortable, supported, and as independent as possible at home.

Helping With Everyday Needs During Treatment and Recovery

Cancer treatment and recovery can affect energy, strength, mobility, and a person’s ability to manage normal daily routines.

Our professional caregivers can provide support with:

  • Bathing, dressing, grooming, and other personal care
  • Walking, mobility, and transfers
  • Meal preparation
  • Light housekeeping and laundry
  • Grocery shopping and errands
  • Transportation and assistance getting to appointments
  • Companionship and emotional support
  • Respite care for family caregivers

Our goal is to provide the right level of assistance while respecting each client’s individual routines, preferences, privacy, and independence.

Companionship Can Make a Difference

Support at home is about more than completing a list of tasks.

Having a trusted caregiver nearby to share a conversation, prepare a meal, accompany someone to an appointment, or simply provide a reassuring presence can be meaningful during a difficult period.

Our companion care services can also provide family caregivers with time to work, manage household responsibilities, attend appointments, or simply take a well-deserved break.

Nursing Support During Recovery

Some individuals may require additional clinical support at home following surgery or during treatment.

Depending on physician orders, an assessment, and an individualized plan of care, our licensed nursing team may be able to assist with services such as:

  • Physician-ordered wound care
  • Medication administration and oversight
  • Health monitoring
  • Post-surgical nursing support
  • Coordination with physicians and other healthcare providers

BrightStar Care of The Monterey Peninsula takes a nurse-led approach to home care, with Registered Nurse oversight of individualized plans of care.

By working with clients, families, physicians, and other healthcare professionals, our team helps support continuity of care as clients transition back into the comfort of home.

Supporting Family Caregivers, Too

A breast cancer diagnosis affects more than the individual receiving treatment. Family members may suddenly find themselves coordinating appointments, preparing meals, managing medications, handling household responsibilities, and providing personal care while continuing to manage their own jobs and families.

Professional in-home care can help families share those responsibilities.

Even a few hours of caregiver assistance can provide valuable time for family caregivers to rest, run errands, work, or spend time with their loved one without having to be the caregiver every moment of the day.

We're Here to Help

Every breast cancer experience is different. Some individuals may only need a little extra help following surgery, while others may benefit from ongoing personal care, companionship, respite care, transportation, or skilled nursing support.

BrightStar Care of The Monterey Peninsula can help you explore a personalized care plan based on your needs and schedule.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we encourage our community to turn awareness into action—check in on someone undergoing treatment, offer practical support to a family caregiver, encourage appropriate screenings, and help connect families with resources when they need them.
