On June 14th, communities across America pause to honor one of our nation’s most enduring symbols—our flag. Here in Monterey County, Flag Day holds a deeply personal meaning, especially for the brave Veterans and Service members who have taken an oath to defend everything that the Stars and Stripes represent.
From the windy bluffs of Fort Ord National Monument to the gates of the Defense Language Institute and the Presidio of Monterey, the American flag flies not just as a symbol of freedom, but as a reflection of sacrifice, service, and unity. It stands tall above homes in Seaside, public buildings in Marina, and at ceremonies in Salinas—not as mere decoration, but as a living tribute to those who have served under it.
For many Veterans in our community, including those residing at the Veterans Transition Center and Lightfighter Village, the flag is a reminder of where they've been, the comrades they've stood beside, and the values they continue to uphold. It’s a source of pride, resilience, and healing.
At BrightStar Care of The Monterey Peninsula, we are honored to support many of these heroes through personalized in-home care that upholds the same dignity and respect they showed in service. Whether assisting with daily needs or simply being a compassionate presence, our caregivers are proud to stand alongside those who’ve stood for our country.
Service members stationed in Monterey are uniquely positioned at the intersection of heritage and duty. Every time they pass by the flag on base, in town, or during local parades and civic events, they are reminded that their work—be it in intelligence, linguistics, or logistics—is a vital part of a much larger mission.
Flag Day is a moment for all of us in Monterey County to reflect—not just on the fabric of the flag, but on the fabric of our community. It’s woven with the stories of those who’ve worn the uniform, those who continue to serve, and those who support them from the home front.
So today, let us raise our flags high—not just from porches and flagpoles, but in our hearts. Let it be a symbol of our gratitude, our shared purpose, and our unwavering respect for the Veterans and Service members who continue to serve our country and our county with honor.
Happy Flag Day, Monterey County. We salute you.
