What Is a Live-In Caregiver?

A live-in caregiver is a trained professional who resides in the home of the person they’re caring for—typically an older adult, someone recovering from surgery, or a person with a chronic condition or disability. Unlike hourly or shift-based care, live-in care offers continuous support and peace of mind, especially for families who want their loved one to remain at home in a safe, familiar environment.

What Does a Live-In Caregiver Do?
They assist with:
  • Personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming)
  • Medication reminders
  • Light housekeeping & laundry
  • Meal preparation & grocery shopping
  • Companionship and emotional support
  • Transportation to appointments
  • Mobility assistance or transfers
They’re on hand during the day and typically get a full night’s rest but are also available for emergencies overnight.

Is a Live-In Caregiver Always Awake?
No — while they’re available throughout the day and for emergencies at night, they do have scheduled rest and sleep time. If your loved one needs constant overnight supervision, 24-hour care (with two caregivers doing 12-hour shifts) may be a better fit.

Why Choose Live-In Care?
  • More personalized, one-on-one attention
  • Familiar home settingno need for assisted living
  • Often more cost-effective than 24-hour shifts (two 12 hour shifts)
  • Consistency: fewer rotating caregivers
  • RN oversight and customized care plans
Live-in care brings peace of mind by combining professional support with the comfort of home. Proudly serving all of Union County, including Summit, Westfield, Union, New Providence, Clark and all surrounding towns.
