Lisa Spano, RN, BSN, Director of Nursing
One of the best aspects of our home-care model is in the nursing oversight of our clients. To help you get more acquainted with our Director of Nursing, we asked Lisa a few questions that we would like to share with you: How long have you been a Nurse?
I have been a Registered Nurse since 2011. I graduated with my Bachelors in Nursing from St. Kate’s in May 2011 and have worked in a variety of settings since the completion of my degree.
What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care®?
I previously worked in a nursing home as a CNA while attending St. Kate’s. Upon graduation I transitioned to an RN position there until I moved to Duluth to work as a Float RN floating between psychiatric, medical/surgical, out patient surgery, rehab and burn units.
In October 2012 I moved back to the twin cities to work on the neurology/neurosurgery unit at the University of MN Medical Center. At this time I also worked on call for Hennepin County as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner covering a total of 13 different hospital Emergency Departments. I completed my certification and am certified as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for adults and adolescents.
Most recently I lived abroad in Costa Rica from November 2014 to May 2016. While living abroad I learned a great deal of Spanish, volunteered in a clinic and also completed my Yoga Teacher Training.
What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about having one on one time with clients to get to know them and feel like I can positively affect the life of my clients as well as their families. I like being creative and thinking of new, creative solutions to challenges. I love to learn new things and gain new perspectives professionally and personally.
Additionally I am very passionate about continuing education and furthering skills with employees who are interested and who share a passion for learning.
I provide A Higher Standard of Care for our BrightStar Care® clients by…
...being a compassionate, openly communicative person with a genuine respect and fascination with the human condition. I find people endlessly fascinating and have a talent of empathizing with others easily. I am able to see large pictures of issues and overcome challenges by actively listening to the needs of others and communicating those needs. Through this I can ensure our clients receive the highest standard of care available!
I also strongly believe in supporting our team through offering activities and trainings to encourage our CNAs, LPNs, RNs, everyone to feel confident and comfortable with their skills in order to deliver the highest standard of care. Happy caregivers share their happiness with their clients.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am an adventurer. By that I mean I love to hike mountains and try out extreme sports. I love traveling as much as I possibly can, and am fond of learning new cultures and navigating in new spaces. I like to live simply and prefer to spend money on experiences instead of things.
I recently married in September 2015 in Costa Rica to my husband who is from Costa Rica. We have a half German Shepard half black lab mix named Kito who is nearly a year and a half and has loads of energy. We moved back to the USA May 2016 and I am more than excited to focus on my career and progressing professionally.
Lastly, my favorite quote that I reference when needed is:
“...And you ask, ‘What if I fall?’ Oh, but my darling, What if you fly?” -E. Hansen
