Here are some fun local-24-7-care activities seniors can participate in on New Year’s Eve. You can plan something to do with the entire family, or a one-on-one activity.

1. Create a Time Capsule
Time capsules can include a photo from the current year, writing samples, footprints, favorite songs, and other information or personal characteristics that will likely change over the years. Your family can make opening and creating the time capsules a tradition. Giving your parent something to look forward to may increase his or her drive, determination, and boost his or her wellbeing.

2. Put Together Countdown Gift Bags
If your loved one is having a gathering, help him or her make gift bags to pass out to guests. The bags should have fun New Year’s Eve trinkets inside, such as party blowers, hats, and other favors that coincide with the holiday. They can be given out as each guest arrives, or your loved one can pass the bags out every hour, as you all count down to the New Year. This activity can keep your loved one socially engaged, which is great for boosting overall health.

Getting regular socialization is crucial for seniors who want to prevent isolation and remain independent while aging in place. Living independently is important for seniors who want to maintain a high quality of life. For some, this simply means receiving help with tasks that have become more challenging to manage over time. Even when families have the best intentions, they may not have the time to provide the care their elderly loved ones need and deserve.

3. Bake Treats
Go online and find fun, celebratory recipes for cookies, cupcakes, and other treats for your loved one to bake this year. Your loved one can make some traditional New Year’s dishes and treats as well. While making the treats, your loved one will need to use his or her short and long-term memory. Cooking preserves memory while providing something fun to do with friends and family.

4. Countdown to the New Year Earlier in the Day
Staying up until midnight isn’t easy for many seniors, because their bodies are tired and they need to follow a normal bedtime schedule. However, they can still count down to the New Year a few hours earlier. Help your loved one create a countdown and choose a time to have the toast. Having an earlier celebration may boost your parent’s mood and offer something to look forward to, even though he or she may miss the actual midnight celebration.

5. Mix Mocktails
Drinking too many alcoholic beverages isn’t good for aging adults, but that shouldn’t stop your loved one from celebrating on New Year’s Eve. As an alternative to your loved one’s favorite drinks, use healthy juices instead of beer, liquor, and other alcoholic beverages. Making mocktails can keep your loved one’s blood pressure and stress levels down while still allowing him or her have a festive toast to start the New Year.

6. Make New Year’s Eve Crafts
Your parent can have fun making hats, noisemakers, party poppers, and other festive crafts to use when ringing in the New Year. Making crafts is the perfect way to keep seniors engaged while boosting hand-eye coordination, memory, and self-esteem. Finishing the crafts may provide a sense of accomplishment and alleviate feelings of doubt, worry, and fear.
