Phone Calls, Video Chats, and Emails Can Prevent Loneliness and Depression in Charlotte Seniors During the Pandemic

July 15, 2020

Keep in touch with Charlotte seniors to help prevent loneliness and depression.

According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, 85% of deaths from COVID 19 in North Carolina are people over the age of 65. Keeping seniors safe at home is our priority. Raising awareness of the impact extended social isolation has on seniors and how we can help our elderly loved ones and neighbors during the pandemic is essential.C19-StaySafeAtHome-1080x1080.jpg

When you can’t physically be with your loved ones due to the risk of spreading COVID-19, the telephone is the best way to connect with seniors. Phone calls, video chats, and emails are effective ways to prevent loneliness and depression in the elderly.

“Reach out to your loved ones. Ensure everyone stays safe and makes sure our connections are nice and strong,” says Dr. Thirath Chau, an Oak Street Health Physician. Chau also points out the risks associated with untreated depression, including the risk of physical and mental illness. Compromised mental health can lead to other physical problems, including increases in hypertension and high blood pressure, which can lead to cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and stress tied to cancer and other illnesses.
