Warning Signs That Your Parents Need Your Help

Many seniors won’t ask for help when they need it. They believe they have worked hard all their lives and asking for help might be a burden to others. When it comes to your parents, you should make sure you keep an eye out for warning signs that they need your help. This way you can help them, without them having to ask for your help.

Notice the Physical Changes

When you are looking out for warning signs that your elderly parents might need your help, one of the first things to look out for is the physical changes. Do they have unexplained bruises? Are they falling often? Do they have issues standing up after sitting for some time? Are they having trouble walking? Do they have body odor? Are they losing or gaining a lot of weight in a short time? If you can say yes to these things, then your elderly parent probably needs your help.

Recognize the Mental Changes

Has your elderly parent been missing their doctor’s appointments? Are they confused a lot lately? Do they seem uncertain of tasks they were once able to handle? Is your elderly parent forgetful? Do they have extreme mood changes? If you can recognize any of these signs in your parent, you should have them see a doctor as soon as possible. They might have dementia or another mental health-related disorder.

Seeing Any Routine or Other Changes

Lastly, you should look out for any routine or other changes that you might notice in your aging parent. Are they taking fewer showers than they should be? Is there house dirty or filled with clutter? Are they not opening up their mail or not getting their mail? Do they get late bill notices in the mail or are they bouncing checks? Have they lost interest in the things they used to enjoy? Do they forget to take their medications? These are all signs that your parent needs your help. It can help to get them checked out by the doctor, but you may also need or want to hire an elderly care provider to help take care of these things.

It's important to watch out for these signs in your aging parents. They have taken care of you your entire life and they probably don’t want to ask for help. Most parents refuse to burden their children with the things they have going on. However, if you can take the time to recognize these signs in your aging parents, you can help them without them needing to ask you for help. If they still refuse your help at that point, they may except it from an elderly care provider.
