Why Caregivers Need Exercise

As a family caregiver, you know how important it is to focus your attention on your aging loved one’s physical and emotional needs. However, that doesn’t mean you should ignore your own. In fact, taking care of yourself may be one of the most important things you can do to be a good caregiver, especially when it comes to exercise. Too many family caregivers think there’s not enough time for regular exercise, but it’s too important to health and wellness to overlook.

Everybody knows that regular exercise is critical to a person’s overall physical and mental well-being, but some caregivers struggle to find the time. Once you look at the benefits of exercise as they relate to your caregiving duties, however, you’ll see that investing in yourself is well worth it. Regular exercise will increase your energy levels, help you lose weight and build strength, and relieve harmful stress. You’ll also lower your risk of diseases and illnesses like diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease. It’s likely that you will become a better caregiver when you take some time to exercise.

It’s never too late for you to start a simple exercise regimen, but it’s all too easy to come up with excuses. Even if you’ve never exercised before, there are plenty of workouts that you can do. In just 10 to 20 minutes per day at least three times per week, exercising in a fun and focused way can bring you the results you need. The hardest part is finding the time among all your responsibilities and duties.

If you are just beginning to exercise regularly, set a goal for yourself to go 10 minutes, three days per week. You can always build up from there as you see and feel the benefits. One of the easiest things to do is take a daily walk, either on your own with music or a podcast, or with a friend. Make sure your pace is brisk and that you do some warmups and cool down stretches.

Another convenient way to work exercise into your daily schedule is to use an exercise video. Whether you stream it or use a DVD, there are many exercise videos for beginners. The advantage of this is that you don’t need to leave your aging loved one to do it—they can be in the next room or you can do this while they are napping.

Many family caregivers find it best to arrange for exercise time on a regular basis by hiring a home care provider to be with their loved one several days of the week. When a home care provider is attending to the senior’s needs, you can get out of the house and take care of your own needs. Take the time to head to the gym, the local fitness center or the pool. There are many exercise classes throughout the day that you can attend. Your loved one will be in good hands with the home care provider while you focus on yourself for a change.

Exercise is so important to your overall well-being, but it’s far too easy to put it off. Strive to be your best and incorporate exercise into your daily routine, and you’ll quickly see all the benefits.
