From adult nursing services and pediatric homecare to medical and non-medical eldercare, no two stories are exactly the same. But woven throughout each of them is all that our caregivers make possible for all those we serve – more joy, more hope, more peace of mind.

A Spouse’s Story: Personal Care
I am writing this email to let you know what an impact your services have made on my family. We have been using Patrick several days per week to assist my husband who is disabled. My husband had his legs crushed 30+ years ago and his shoulders are in bad shape from constantly using his upper extremities. He can walk very short distances and predominantly uses an electric wheelchair. Patrick has changed our lives through providing exceptional personal care.
Ruth’s Story: Intensive Care – Caregiver of the Year 2010
When Tracy Duran came into our lives our world had turned upside down. My husband Jim had been in intensive care for too many days and was finally returning home and we needed help. The good Lord must have been watching over us because He sent us Tracy. From the day she arrived she became a part of our family. I wasn’t sure what a “caregiver” would do but I knew we needed someone to help us. Tracy arrived and just wrapped us in her love and has taken care of us ever since. Read more about all that Tracy did to provide compassionate assistance following one family’s stay in intensive care.
Monica’s Story: Infusion Therapy
I’d like to thank BrightStar for sending Monica as my caregiver. She is one of the most dedicated to her job. People say they care, but she shows it. She always makes my treatments (infusion therapy) go by so great. She is always asking me if I’m okay and if I need anything. She always fits the treatments for my schedule, even if it takes away from hers. But BrightStar provided more than infusion therapy.
We received a call as a response from an advertisement that we ran in one of our area’s parish bulletins last Friday. The call was from a woman whose mother lived in a neighboring town. She was looking for general help for her 89 year old mother for bathing and some shopping needs, either accompanying her or performing some rudimentary errands for her. Some other health care agency would have simply dispatched a CNA to start performing these tasks for her. Read about how RN oversight saved her life.
First-Time Parents’ Story
BrightStar was there when we needed them the most. We are first time parents and enjoying our time with our 4-month old daughter. But, when I went back to work, she began the daycare experience and encountered the ‘daycare sickies.’ Read about the newborn care and support BrightStar was able to provide.
A Hospice Organization’s Story

Dementia Care: Jane & Bill’s* Story
My name is Jane*. My husband Bill* is a patient/client of BrightStar. I would like to nominate Jessica Olsen for the BrightStar Caregiver of the Year 2009, including the $5000 scholarship, for her role as CNA for William. Bill* is nursing home qualified with a long list of diagnoses, including Dementia and Parkinson’s. This keeps us from actively participating in church, family or social activities. Read more about the dementia care Jessica provided.
Cancer Care: A Daughter’s Story
Cassie went above and beyond with my mother during her time of lung & brain cancer. She always made herself available to us any time of day or night, and she made that clear to me in the very beginning. My mother liked her from the moment she met Cassie and the love and bond between the two was very evident. Read more about Cassie’s cancer care story.

Respite Care: Sarah & Sam’s* Story
Jen came into the lives of Sarah* and Sam Smith* when Sam* was 85 and, while still healthy overall, he was becoming increasingly frail and forgetful due to advancing Dementia and diabetes. Sarah* was 81, battling cancer and moving through the stages of chemotherapy with minimal disruption to her life. Nevertheless, Sam’s* advancing frailty and memory loss put heavy demands on Sarah, which began to wear her down. Read more about the respite care Jen provided to help Sarah* and Sam*.

"I wish to give my heartfelt thanks to BrightStar, to Robert his staff and all the caregivers who helped me care for my husband. Because of advancing ALZ I tried placing him in a nice memory care facility. But after a serious UTI infection and an injury to his back from a fall I decided to bring him home and get the best home care I could find. I had heard about BrightStar so I called and spoke to Robert. My problem was that I didn't know when my husband would be released from the hospital, but that wasn't a problem for Robert. My husband was released unexpectedly on Friday afternoon and Robert had someone there at 7:00 am the next morning. All of his caregivers were very competent as well as compassionate, which made it easier for my husband to accept their care. I couldn't have done without their help! Thank you all so much!!!" --Kathleen, Agoura Hills, CA. Dec.2016 "BrightStar has been a godsend for my dad and for me. They provided quality assistance for dad as he was recovering from neck surgery. He really liked the people and was very comfortable to have them in his home. I didn't have to worry that he wasn't keeping up with his medication or meals. I knew he was safe and content. I knew he had someone to help him with his shopping and other errands. We will continue to use BrightStar as needed. We highly recommend them." -- Peter, Agoura Hills, March 2016 "I want to take this time to thank BrightStar Care Conejo Valley and its staff for the exceptional service and care my parents were given when I employed you. My living in another state made it difficult for me to watch my elderly parents who are both 91. But you guys did a fantastic job. From caring for my Mom who needed companionship and personal assistance services to driving my Dad back and forth from the hospital and assisted living after my Mom needed surgery. My Dad was especially vulnerable to falling after my Mom was hospitalized due to the stress it put him through. They have been married for 71 years! You sent me angels who cared for both of them in so many ways. The angels you sent carefully held on to my elderly Dad as you drove him back and forth to where he needed to go. They not only assisted both of them, but really cared for them in a way that made them feel cared for and loved. Because of your assistance they got through a tough time and so did I. Words are not adequate to express my deep gratitude for all you have done to help me and my parents Thank you so very much for everything. You are truly ANGELS!"
Marion – Malibu, CA, March 2015
Robert and Gerallie Gutierrez,
As a CNA for BrightStar Care of Conejo Valley, I’m what you may call a “Late Bloomer” spending my early years as a stay-at-home mom for my two kids. When they graduated high school, I realized they don’t need their mommy anymore. In 2009, I decided to become a nurse and attending the local college working towards my Associate’s degree taking me 3 years to get the 2 year degree. I applied to the nursing program and was then placed on a 3 year waiting list before accepting. After 6 weeks in the program, I was dropped. Seems I’m not too good at paperwork and was too focused on the patients’ outcomes, which I realized was the responsibility of a Certified Nursing Assistant. I began attending school again and received my CNA license and have been providing care to patients in their home since July of 2012. I have often been asked, ” What made you decide to go into Home Health Care?” Well, there are so many reasons.
Working in home health care for BrightStar has filled a void for me. I have “love” to share, and I truly enjoy caring for people who can no longer care for themselves. I find it challenging but always more rewarding and satisfying. It’s hard to not fall in love with oour clients. Their stories are always so fascinating; I love hearing about their families, careers, and accomplishments from years past. I know every little thing I do is appreciated. I take pride in finding ways to bring comfort and dignity to them. Sometimes just being a good ear is all it takes. I may be in my 50s but I still have a lot left in me to give to the patients and families I provide care to at BrightStar Conejo Valley. They may be disabled or aging but they sure give a lot to me. I look forward to seeing them every day as they look forward to seeing me.
Thank you, Shirley S., CNA
