Tips to make a Senior’s Holiday Experience Special

The holidays are times for family, friends and food. Time-honored traditions of gathering with loved ones and sharing in the holiday spirit are things most seniors look forward to, but for some, there can be isolation and even depression during the holiday season. There are certain losses, including illness and death among other aging relatives and friends, that can hinder even the healthiest senior’s spirit.  The holidays can cause loneliness and sadness for some, so for family members and caregivers, this is the season to bring good cheer to our elders.

Here are some ideas to make the holidays special for your eldelry friend or relative:
  • Make a point of actively listening when your loved one wants to talk.
  • Remind them how important they are as a part of your life and your family members’ lives and these annual holiday celebrations.
  • Help address or send greeting cards.
  • Take them to a holiday concert, community event or festive outing
  • Help them add decorate for the holidays
  • Cook traditional baked goods or treats with your loved one
  • Call your elder’s friends and other family members to come and visit for a small holiday gathering. The most important thing you can do with a senior to make them feel loved and included this season is to simply spend time with them.
  • Look at family photos, watch home videos or holiday movies, and listen to seasonal music, or do crafts together.
Whatever you decide to do together, any time you can spare is a precious gift. Do what you can to help your aging loved one feel involved and get into the holiday spirit without stressing yourself beyond your limits. If you put too much on your plate, it is likely that neither you nor your loved ones will enjoy the festivities nearly as much. Remember that your best efforts are good enough.
