Ways You and Your Senior Can Volunteer Your Time This Season

This is the time of year when many people like to look for ways that they can give back to the community by volunteering their time.

Whether you are helping out an official organization, a non-profit, or your next door neighbor by offering to watch her kids while she gets some holiday shopping done, there are many ways that you and your senior parent or loved one can give your time to help people less fortunate.

Soup Kitchen

There are shelters for the needy and homeless that are often looking for volunteers to help serve food this time of year. Call ahead to see when they need help and what the requirements might be.

Hospital services

Some hospitals will allow volunteers to come in and offer companionship or other services to patients there. Check with your local hospital to see what they might need volunteers for, and make sure you and your senior take precautions by never going when you are sick and washing your hands every time you leave a room.

Reading to youth

Local schools and libraries often have programs where adults can read books to children. It’s a great way to bond with the people in your community and help kids appreciate books and reading.

Meal delivery

Some areas have local programs that offer hot meals to people that are in need or to people receiving elder care at home. These organizations are typically counting on volunteers to deliver their meals and supplies, and it’s a great way to spend your time meeting with people and putting a smile on their face as you help them out.

Wrapping presents

There are usually community outreach programs that are looking for help wrapping holiday presents that were donated for local children in need. Reach out to your local ministry facility to ask where you are needed and what you can do.

Animal shelter

If you or the senior in your life are an animal lover, consider taking some time to help out at an area animal shelter. Dogs, cats, and other animals require a lot of care and there are many ways that you can help the people responsible for their health and well-being. Make sure your senior is comfortable being around animals and that they are accepting volunteers before you go.

Help a neighbor

If you have someone in your life that could use a bit of a break or help with something, don’t be afraid to help! You may have a family member, neighbor, or a member of your community that could use some help. Is there someone you could make a meal for, or help them with a task,  chore, or elder care issue? Is someone going through an especially tough time or dealing with a hard loss? This is a great way for you to make an immediate and important impact right here at home.
