One of the things you might have missed since becoming a caregiver is being able to do things just for yourself whenever you want. You can still do that, but it might take some closer attention to how and when you plan certain things.
Figure out What Helps You Relax
What is it that recharges you and helps you to relax? When you’re stressed and trying to take time for yourself, it can be difficult to come up with an activity that will do the trick. When you’ve got a list, though, you can pick something that feels right from the list. As you run across activities you enjoy, put them in a list.
Begin Each Day with Something for You
If you are the type who wakes up before everyone else, start using that time for you. Even getting up ten minutes earlier might give you a chance to meditate or to read for fun, which is something you might not have time for otherwise. When you start out the day by doing something you can enjoy doing, you’re not ending that day yet one more time without focusing on you even for a couple of minutes.
Timers Can Keep You on Task
Time gets away from everyone, but especially from a busy caregiver. If you can remember to set timers periodically, that can help you to stay on target. For instance, if you want to do a certain task by a specific time, setting a timer fifteen minutes before that time can help you to remember. Or you might start keeping track of how long different tasks take for you to do. Then you can start batching them together to save you time elsewhere.
Match Your Schedule to Your Senior’s
There’s a natural ebb and flow to your senior’s day and if you start paying attention to that, you might find that when your senior is doing certain things, you might be able to take time just for yourself. For instance, if her favorite show is on daily at a set time, you might find that she’s occupied enough that you can read for a little while or catch up on your own favorite show.
There are always possibilities for creating some spare time for yourself as a caregiver, but you might have to become a little more creative about that time than you’ve had to be in the past.
