Exploring the Features of a Community-Focused Home

June 28, 2023

Welcome to the story of a remarkable small-house senior living community meticulously designed to provide residents with an exceptional living experience. With the expertise of architect Jeff Hatch and the interior design finesse of CMoore Homes LLC, this 5,371-square-foot home is a testament to thoughtful planning and collaboration.

The Vision and Collaboration

In 2016, Caroline  Moore, who was already operating another location for BrightStar Care, approached the company for another senior living community. A year later, plans for this remarkable project were set in motion. Moore's vision seamlessly came to life through a collaborative process with architect Jeff Hatch, creating a truly remarkable space.

Designing with Residents in Mind

One of the core principles that guided the creation of this small-house senior living community was a deep understanding of its residents' needs, preferences, and aspirations. The project team recognized that a successful design goes beyond aesthetics and encompasses functionality, comfort, and promoting a sense of belonging. With this in mind, they embarked on a journey to craft a space that would truly enhance the lives of those who call it home.

To ensure that every aspect of the community met the needs of residents, the project team engaged in extensive research and consultation with experts in senior care. They sought to understand seniors' physical, emotional, and cognitive requirements, considering factors such as mobility, accessibility, safety, and social interaction.

The design they landed on reflects a careful balance between privacy and community living. Each ten private bedroom was meticulously planned to provide a personal sanctuary, allowing residents to retreat and recharge in their own space. Warm yellow walls, roomy closets, and personalized furniture complete the private rooms, ensuring each resident feels a sense of ownership and comfort.

But the community extends far beyond individual rooms. Open site lines were incorporated into the design to enable caregivers to maintain constant visual contact with residents. This enhances safety and security and facilitates timely assistance when needed, promoting peace of mind for both residents and their families.

The Heart of the Home: The Kitchen and Dining Area

In this small-house senior living community, the kitchen and dining area hold a special place at the center of the home. Designed to be more than just functional spaces, they are vibrant hubs that foster social connections, culinary delights, and a sense of togetherness.

As residents enter the kitchen, they are greeted by an inviting atmosphere that immediately feels like home. The space is carefully designed to be practical and welcoming, with a resident bar as a gathering point for conversations and social interactions. Residents can sit at the bar, engage in lively discussions, and share stories while enjoying a coffee or a refreshing beverage. The bar area becomes a natural meeting spot where friendships are forged, and a strong sense of community is nurtured.

The kitchen and dining area serve as more than just places to eat; they catalyze social interaction, creating opportunities for residents to bond and forge meaningful connections. Shared meals become cherished moments where residents come together, sharing food, laughter, stories, and the joy of companionship.

Honoring Individualism: Unique Spaces for Residents

The project team has strongly emphasized honoring each resident's individuality in this small-house senior living community. They recognize that every person has their preferences, interests, and needs and have carefully designed unique spaces within the community to cater to these individual traits.

The project team understood the importance of balancing community living and personal space. As a result, they created an environment that offers a range of areas where residents can express themselves, pursue their passions, and find moments of solitude when desired.

One of the key design considerations was the creation of a continuous loop of hallways that encouraged residents to explore and engage with their surroundings. These hallways provide opportunities for gentle walks, facilitating exercise and promoting mobility. Residents can meander through the community, appreciating the beautiful interior and connecting with fellow residents as they pass by.

A standout feature of the community is the carefully crafted "Rocking Chair Alley." This serene space provides a tranquil retreat where residents can relax, unwind, and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of rocking chairs. Situated by large windows, residents can bask in natural light while observing the birds at the feeders outside. This unique space offers a place of solace and reflection, allowing residents to find a sense of calm amidst their busy lives.

Beyond these individual spaces, the community also features communal areas to celebrate diversity and encourage social interactions. The great room, covered patio, and sunroom provide versatile spaces for residents to gather, engage in group activities, and bond with their neighbors. These spaces are thoughtfully furnished with comfortable seating and amenities that cater to various interests, creating an environment where residents can connect, collaborate, and cultivate new friendships.

Integrating Nature and Resident Participation

The integration of nature and resident participation lies at the heart of this small-house senior living community. The project team recognized nature's profound impact on well-being and sought to create a space where residents could connect with the natural world. To achieve this, outdoor spaces were carefully designed to provide opportunities for residents to engage with nature, fostering a sense of vitality and serenity.

One notable feature is the presence of raised garden beds that grow herbs and flowers. Residents actively participate in the planting and nurturing the home's greenery, fostering a sense of purpose and connection with the natural environment. This involvement promotes physical activity and mental stimulation and encourages a sense of pride and ownership in the community.

Furthermore, the outdoor spaces offer a variety of activities that allow residents to immerse themselves fully in nature. Nature walks provide opportunities for residents to explore the surrounding area, breathe in fresh air, and appreciate the beauty of the landscape. Outdoor grilling and the large outdoor deck with rocking chairs offer spaces where residents can gather, socialize, and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of being outdoors. By integrating nature into residents' daily lives, this community creates a harmonious environment that nurtures the body, mind, and spirit.

Modern Technology and Energy Efficiency

The small-house senior living community embraces the benefits of modern technology to enhance resident safety, security, and energy efficiency. By integrating innovative solutions, the project team has created a space that prioritizes the well-being of residents while reducing its environmental impact.

The community has advanced security features, including a secure perimeter, coded exits, and a sophisticated camera system with infrared motion sensors. These measures provide residents with a secure and safe environment, ensuring their peace of mind and staff's prompt response in case of emergencies. The camera system not only acts as a security measure but also assists in monitoring resident well-being, allowing caregivers to promptly detect and respond to any health events, such as falls, ensuring the utmost care and support.

In addition to security, energy efficiency is a strong focus of the community. The integration of solar panels plays a significant role in meeting the home's energy needs. These panels harness the sun's power, converting it into clean and renewable energy. The community significantly reduces its dependence on traditional energy sources by relying on solar energy, contributing to a more sustainable future. The efficient use of solar power benefits the environment and reduces energy costs, making the community more financially viable in the long run.

The incorporation of modern technology and energy efficiency measures showcases the commitment of the small-house senior living community to providing a safe and sustainable environment. By embracing advanced security systems and leveraging solar energy, the community ensures that residents enjoy a secure and comfortable living space while minimizing their carbon footprint. This forward-thinking approach demonstrates a dedication to the well-being of residents and the planet, creating a harmonious and eco-friendly community that aligns with today's seniors' evolving needs and values.\
