My son got married on October 11th! Cannon and his wife, Courtney, got engaged over a year ago and planned the entire ceremony and reception together without help from either sets of parents. When Cannon first told me and my husband that he wanted to ask my dad, aged 81, to officiate, I have to admit that I was a little concerned. Dad's vision and hearing aren't as clear as they used to be, his voice is not as strong. I worried that the stress of the responsibility might be overwhelming.
But they did ask him and he responded with humility and gratefulness. They met regularly over the course of the year as Dad learned more about how they fell in love and how they lift one another up and he shared stories about Mom and his 60-year marriage.
For the ceremony, the coordinator put a microphone on him and he printed his thoughts in large font. The truth is, my dad performed an amazing, beautiful ceremony and no one could have been more perfect for the job. My son saw that his grandfather had life experience and wisdom that deserved to be honored and expressed publicly. And what better time, than this most important life event.
My son's ability to see my dad's particular strengths for officiating the ceremony reminded me of why I have passion for helping seniors age safely in their homes. Each person deserves to be seen in the fulness of what they continue to be able to contribute to their family, church and friends. Through BrightStar, I am so proud to extend support to seniors through caregivers who also feel passionate about honoring the fathers and grandfathers, mothers and grandmothers, so that they can continue to age in place with dignity, being known as the unique individuals they are.
