Caring for a loved one is an incredible act of dedication, but when that loved one is a Veteran, the responsibilities often come with unique challenges. Many caregivers of Veterans find themselves navigating complex healthcare needs, coordinating multiple services, and ensuring their loved ones receive the best possible support. Fortunately, the VA Caregiver Support Program (CSP) exists to provide essential assistance to those who take on this vital role.

What Is the VA Caregiver Support Program?

The Program of General Caregiver Support Services (PGCSS) is a VA initiative that provides a variety of resources for caregivers of Veterans enrolled in VA healthcare. This program is open to any caregiver, whether they are a family member, friend, or other support person helping a Veteran with daily activities or medical needs.

Key Benefits of the VA Caregiver Support Program:

  • Training and Education – Access to in-person, online, and telehealth-based training to help caregivers feel confident in their role.
  • One-on-One Support – Coaching and assistance tailored to the caregiver’s needs.
  • Peer Mentoring – Connection with experienced caregivers who provide advice, encouragement, and emotional support.
  • Respite Care – Temporary relief to allow caregivers to rest and recharge while their loved one receives care in a safe environment.

How to Enroll in the VA Caregiver Support Program

Enrolling in the PGCSS is straightforward:

  1. Contact the local VA Caregiver Support Program (CSP) Team.
  2. Request a referral from the Veteran’s healthcare provider.
  3. Complete an intake process with the CSP Team.
  4. Start accessing benefits and resources at no cost.
