Why Seniors Should Use Social Media

It seems like just about everyone you know uses social media to keep up with friends and family, for business, for news and for entertainment. But how many elderly adults do you know that have social media accounts. If your aging relative is already part of the growing demographic of seniors who happily use social media, it may be time for you, family members and home care providers to get them set up.

Should Seniors Use Social Media?

Elderly adults have a high risk of isolation, depression and loneliness. Often, they are dealing with physical problems that prevent them from taking care of themselves and they rely on home care providers. It can be lonely and isolating to experience retirement, loss of a spouse, chronic illnesses, disease and family members who live far away. Senior depression is too common, even if they have a few family members nearby and a home care provider to visit with.

With social media in their lives, aging adults can keep up with family members, connect with friends, learn more about consumer brands, stay up to date on the news and find entertainment. They can learn about new topics, understand what’s happening in their community, talk about their hobbies and passions and research their own health issues. Just as other age groups use social media to enhance and enrich their lives, seniors can really benefit from it.

What Do Seniors Need to Get Started?

Using social media may seem like second nature to you and your family, but to your elderly loved one, it can seem intimidating and scary. They may not even understand exactly what social media is or how it can benefit their life. It’s up to you to educate them on social media and get them set up with an account or two.

Many people find that seniors do best with a laptop computer or tablet when it comes to social media. They are portable, easy to operate and big enough to make viewing comfortable. You, a family member or the home care provider should set up the social media account they need, navigating through privacy settings, linking with family members and getting everything set up. Then, all the senior must do is log in and enjoy.

At first, your aging relative may need you or the home care provider close at hand when they first start navigating online. It’s easy to get frustrated, especially if they haven’t had much exposure to technology. However, with time and patience, your loved one can pick it up. Written instructions can help them remember what to do when you or the home care provider aren’t nearby.

It’s never too late to get your elderly relative plugged into social media. Not only will they get to stay current on what’s happening with others, but the people they love can also get more involved in their life, too.
