Whether you care for an aging parent, relative, or client, preparation can make the difference between chaos and calm. Here's how to manage elderly care during emergencies with foresight and compassion.
Here’s a step-by-step guide for preparing a plan for any emergency:
Document Critical Information. Prepare and keep copies of a one-page summary that includes key vital statistics such as full name, date of birth, and a recent photo. Medical conditions, allergies and medications are also important information to include. The name of contact for the primary care physician can also be included. Build an emergency kit. A well-stocked kit should be easy to carry and accessible at all times. It should include all medications, health related devices and and daily living items that might be otherwise hard to find. The kit should also have any important documents for identification or travel as well as living will and trust papers. Finally, items such as blankets, flashlights and personal toiletries should be part of the emergency kit.
Anticipate medical needs. A plan for access to refrigeration, backup power sources and local hospitals and pharmacies is critical for ongoing health care needs of an elderly loved one.

Develop a plan for evacuation. Create a list of local shelters that accommodate seniors or people with disabilities. Keep a “go bag” ready at all times. If your loved one is in assisted living, ask the facility about its emergency evacuation protocol. In a crisis, the last thing you want to do is scramble.
By planning ahead, building a support network, and customizing your emergency kit, you’ll be able to keep your elderly loved one safe, calm, and cared for—even in the most stressful situations. Emergencies don’t wait. But with the right tools and knowledge, you’ll be ready—and so will they.
