Neurological disorders are conditions affecting the nervous system. In seniors, symptoms typically suggest the most common disorders including Multiple Sclerosis, stroke , Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease and neuropathy. Those symptoms often encompass changes in mobility, eating and thinking as well as emotional or behavioral issues.

There isn’t a cure for all of the neurological disorders seniors can suffer from but there are treatments and life modifications that can be implemented in order to manage the condition and enable older people to live a more normal and fulfilling life.

Older people who suffer from these common neurological disorders can experience confusion and disorientation which can induce stress and anxiety. A great way to alleviate these unsettling emotional issues is to create a sense a stability through predictability. “Creating a consistent daily routine is so important for the elderly who suffer from these conditions”, says Susan Nimnuan, Vice President of BrightStar Care of Ft. Myers/Naples. “Avoiding uncertainty goes along way to a better sense of self and wellbeing”, she says.

Another great way to help seniors suffering neurologically is through stimulating activities that exercise their bodies and brains. For example, board games can stimulate both cognitive and mobility functions that may be limited by their condition. Other activities that can help and be mutually enjoyable include arts and crafts as well as outdoor exercise like walking. These types of activities are beneficial not only for the physical aspects but also for emotional health because they promote socialization.

“Family and friends who care for an older person with these medical conditions can also find help and support through assisted living services like BrightStar”, says Susan. In home non-medical care providers are specially trained to assist their older clients with a sense of security through a methodical routine of care that includes physical and cognitive support as well as companionship. This can be especially helpful with progressive conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Sometimes, it’s a combination of ways to care for seniors with neurological disorders that makes the difference and allows them to age more independently while managing the symptoms they experience.
