A Season Full of Opportunities
Lynchburg has a deep network of organizations that offer programming designed to keep older adults active, connected, and engaged throughout the year.
This fall, the lineup is especially strong, with options that range from weekly university lectures and senior wellness programs to living history tours, art classes, community outings, and free movie matinees.

If you are helping a loved one find one new thing to try this fall, the LIFE@Lynchburg program at the University of Lynchburg is a popular place to start, but there are several other programs worth exploring depending on what fits best.

LIFE@Lynchburg at the University of Lynchburg
The University of Lynchburg's LIFE@Lynchburg program is now in its fifth year and offers not-for-credit learning opportunities for community members aged 50 and older.
The fall 2026 semester is underway and runs every Wednesday from 10:00 AM to noon in Schewel Hall's Sydnor Performance Hall at 1501 Lakeside Drive.
Each week features a different speaker and topic. The remaining fall lineup includes "Medal of Honor Recipient Desmond Doss" on October 7, "Righting the Record" on October 21, "Autism Spectrum Disorder: Concepts, Misconceptions, and Hypotheses" on October 28, and "Resurrection Men: Body-snatching and the Making of American Medicine" in November, among others.

Membership starts at $100 per semester, with individual sessions available for $15 and virtual memberships at $55 per semester for those who prefer to participate from home. Members also receive reserved parking, borrowing privileges at Knight-Capron Library, reduced meals in the dining hall, and access to session recordings.
New this semester is a reading list tied to the fall presentations, with books provided by the Treadway Family Fund and available for checkout at Knight-Capron Library.
As program director Sarah Rhodes has shared, "This program is about more than learning; it's about friendship and community. Our members spend time together, dine together, and travel together. They look out for one another and their neighbors."

Old City Cemetery Candlelight Tours
One of Lynchburg's most anticipated fall events returns this October when Old City Cemetery hosts its 19th Annual Candlelight Tours in partnership with Endstation Theatre Company.
Running from October 1 through October 23, the tours take guests on a candle-lit walking journey through the historic 27-acre cemetery at 401 Taylor Street while costumed actors bring real stories from the cemetery's 220-year history to life.
This year's tours celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary through the stories of people buried on the grounds.

For guests who prefer not to walk over uneven terrain, an accessible non-walking matinee is scheduled for October 18 at 2:00 PM. Old City Cemetery has also partnered with Centra PACE this year to provide shuttle service to and from the venue, making parking and access easier for attendees with mobility needs.
These tours sell out quickly, so early ticket purchases are recommended. Tickets are available through Endstation Theatre Company.
Templeton Center Senior Programs
The Templeton Center, operated by Lynchburg Parks and Recreation at 225 Wiggington Road, is one of the city's main hubs for senior and adult programming with activities running Monday through Thursday.
Weekly staples include chair exercise every morning, social bridge, canasta, Tai Chi, modern line dance, and yoga, giving older adults a reliable structure to build their week around.
This fall also brings a mix of special events, from Memory Café gatherings and a Drumheller Apple Festival Trip to creative workshops like Needle Felted Halloween Coasters, Acrylic Afternoons, and Reflective Journaling. A Blue Ridge Foliage Trip rounds out October, and art classes continue into November.
Specific dates and offerings may shift month to month, so check the latest schedule by calling the Templeton Center at (434) 455-4115 or picking up a copy of their monthly newsletter.
YMCA of Central Virginia Aging Well Adults
The YMCA of Central Virginia's Aging Well Adults program runs year-round across its three Lynchburg branches, including the Jamerson Family YMCA and the YMCA on Old Forest Road.
Ongoing offerings include a Bridge Club, Hikers and Walkers groups at various fitness levels, Marvelous Mahjongg, a monthly Book Club, a monthly Memory Café for individuals with Alzheimer's and their caregivers, and Give Back Do Good community service projects.
The program is free to YMCA members, with activities scheduled weekly and monthly throughout the fall. To get involved, email Mary Taylor at marytaylor@ymcacva.org or visit the Aging Well Adults page.
More to Explore This Fall
The Lynchburg Public Library hosts a free Golden Age Matinee on the fourth Monday of each month at the Miller Center Theatre, 301 Grove Street. Upcoming screenings on October 27 and November 24 run from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM with no registration required, making it one of the easiest outings to try.

For older adults who enjoy live music, the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra is partnering with Wolfbane Productions for a run of Sweeney Todd at the Wolf Den Downtown on October 23, 24, 25, 30, and 31, with matinee options available. The LSO's annual Happy Holidays concert follows on December 5 at the Academy Center of the Arts.
Getting There: Local Support for Transportation and Accessibility
Planning to attend a Wednesday morning at LIFE@Lynchburg but not sure how to get there? Lynchburg has several transportation resources that can help older adults access community programming.

The Greater Lynchburg Transit Company (GLTC) operates bus routes across the city with a $2.00 single ride fare and a half-fare option for qualifying riders. For individuals whose disability prevents them from using regular bus routes, GLTC's Paratransit Service provides door-to-door rides in wheelchair-accessible vehicles for $4.00 per trip. Reservations can be made by calling (434) 455-5099 by 5:00 PM the day before.

The Central Virginia Alliance for Community Living (CVACL) also offers Dial-A-Ride for adults 60 and older, providing transportation to medical appointments, pharmacies, and grocery stores with wheelchair-accessible vans and door-through-door assistance on a sliding-scale fee. Rides can be scheduled by calling (434) 385-9070 at least three business days in advance. In Bedford County, CVACL's Bedford Ride program provides similar services through a volunteer driver network with just two business days' notice.

For families coordinating care and transportation together, knowing these resources exist can make it easier to build a weekly routine that includes the programs that matter most.
