May is ALS Awareness Month, a time to focus on a disease that doesn't always get the attention it deserves. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often called ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, affects the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. It leads to progressive muscle weakness and loss of function. Over time, people living with ALS may lose the ability to speak, eat, move, and breathe on their own, all while their minds often remain sharp.
According to the ALS Association, about 5,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. Most are between the ages of 40 and 70, although it can strike younger adults too. The cause is still not fully understood, and there is no cure yet. Treatments exist to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life, but the disease remains devastating.
Awareness matters because early diagnosis can help individuals access therapies, clinical trials, and supportive care that can make a real difference. It also matters because ALS research relies heavily on public support and advocacy. Advances are happening; new medications, assistive technologies, and ongoing genetic research are offering hope where there was once none.
Living with ALS demands strength, both from the individual and from their caregivers. It also demands a team approach. Managing ALS often requires coordinated care from neurologists, respiratory therapists, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, and home health providers.
At BrightStar Care of Milford-Framingham, we understand how critical in-home support can be for individuals with ALS and their families. Staying at home, surrounded by familiar comforts, can make a huge impact on emotional well-being and quality of life. Our team provides skilled nursing care, personal care assistance, and companionship services designed to adapt as the needs of someone with ALS change over time.
One of the things that sets BrightStar Care apart is how we tailor each care plan to the individual. A Director of Nursing oversees every case, ensuring that services match the client’s evolving physical needs and personal goals. Whether helping with mobility, managing feeding tubes, providing respiratory support, or simply being there as a steady, reassuring presence, our nurses and caregivers deliver care with professionalism and compassion.
We proudly serve the Milford, Framingham, Holliston, Hopkinton, and surrounding communities with the highest clinical standards. BrightStar Care of Milford-Framingham is Joint Commission accredited, meaning we meet national standards for quality and safety that many home care companies do not. Families trust us because we combine medical expertise with genuine heart.
ALS is a tough diagnosis, no sugarcoating it. But with the right support network, individuals and families can focus more on living meaningfully day to day rather than being overwhelmed by logistics and care challenges.
During ALS Awareness Month, we encourage you to learn a little more, share a little more, and advocate a little louder. Every voice raised helps move us closer to better treatments, better understanding, and eventually a cure.
If you or someone you love in the Milford-Framingham area is facing an ALS diagnosis and could use professional in-home support, BrightStar Care is ready to walk beside you. Not just as caregivers, but as partners in care, in hope, and in resilience.
