In-Home Lab Draws and Blood Work at Home in Plano TX

For seniors, post-surgical patients, immunocompromised individuals, and anyone managing a complex chronic condition, the trip to a lab or clinic for routine blood work is often more than a minor inconvenience — it is a significant physical burden, an infection exposure risk, and a logistical challenge that causes labs to be skipped or delayed. BrightStar Care of Plano provides Registered Nurse-supervised in-home phlebotomy and lab draw services throughout Plano, Allen, McKinney, Fairview, and all of Collin County — bringing the clinic to the patient.

Our nurses perform venipuncture and collect blood specimens in the home, and specimens are transported to a certified processing laboratory the same day. Results are typically available to the ordering physician within 24 hours — the same turnaround as a clinic or hospital draw, with none of the travel burden.

Lab Tests We Draw at Home

BrightStar Care nurses can draw virtually any ordered lab panel at home, including:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC) — monitoring for anemia, infection, platelet counts during chemotherapy or antibiotic therapy
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) — kidney function, liver function, electrolytes, glucose — essential for CHF, CKD, and antibiotic monitoring
  • INR / PT (Prothrombin Time) — critical for warfarin-anticoagulated patients managing atrial fibrillation, DVT, stroke prevention, or mechanical heart valves
  • BNP / NT-proBNP — heart failure biomarker monitoring for CHF patients
  • HbA1c and fasting glucose — diabetes monitoring and medication adjustment support
  • Antibiotic drug levels (vancomycin, aminoglycosides) — essential for patients on home IV antibiotics through our IV therapy program
  • Thyroid function (TSH, T3, T4)
  • Lipid panels, PSA, tumor markers — for oncology monitoring in cancer patients
  • Blood cultures — when infection is suspected
  • Wound cultures — collected at the bedside in coordination with wound care visits

Who Benefits Most from In-Home Lab Draws

Homebound patients. Patients who are homebound — unable to leave the home without considerable difficulty — may qualify for Medicare-covered in-home lab draws when ordered by a physician as part of a home health plan of care.

Anticoagulation patients. Patients on warfarin require frequent INR monitoring — often weekly or biweekly. Each clinic trip for an INR draw is a burden that causes many patients to miss checks and suffer preventable bleeding or clotting events. In-home INR draws eliminate this barrier entirely. Our medication management team coordinates INR results with the anticoagulation clinic or treating physician.

OPAT patients. Patients receiving home IV antibiotic therapy require regular monitoring labs — kidney function, drug levels, CBC. In-home lab draws make this monitoring routine and stress-free.

Cancer patients in active treatment. CBC monitoring during chemotherapy is essential for detecting neutropenia and dose-limiting toxicities. In-home draws eliminate exhausting clinic trips on low-energy treatment days.

Pediatric patients. For medically complex children requiring regular lab monitoring, in-home draws eliminate the distress and logistical burden of clinic visits. Our pediatric nursing team is experienced in pediatric phlebotomy.
