COURSE DESCRIPTION

Dementia is a general term for any disease that causes a change in memory and/or thinking skills and is severe enough to impair a person’s daily functioning (Weill Institute for Neurosciences – UCSF). Although Alzheimer’s disease is often thought of as the most common form, it is not the only form of dementia. And, dementia is also not part of the normal aging process.

This course will look at the various types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, as well as some of the latest treatments and potential lifestyle changes, such as physical exercise and a healthy diet, that can be incorporated to reduce the risk of acquiring various forms of dementia. The course will also delve into the care of dementia patients and explore some of the latest research into dementia.

Attendees will learn to/about:

- The various types of dementia, including symptoms and risk factors for each
- Behaviors associated with dementia, what are those behaviors indicating, and how can they be responded to from the perspective of those providing care
- The status of some of the current research in dementia, what are we discovering
- Lifestyle changes that could have an impact on the chances of having some types of dementia
