Heat and Air Quality Impact San Fernando Valley Seniors

Summer Heat and Smoke Dangers for San Fernando Valley Seniors

News reports show there have already been seven heat-related deaths across San Fernando Valley since July and more excessive heat and smog are expected this summer.

Older people and those with respiratory illnesses such as asthma and COPD are particularly at risk of smoke-related health problems. However, in extreme conditions healthy people also may experience short-term breathing problems, eye irritation and coughing.

Seniors should be assertive in their own care and know how to find help. Make sure you know the people who live around you, so people can come check on you. The news report also stated that the most notable setback has been with the ozone, from smog as lung-damaging gas in smog builds up in warm, sunny weather and triggers asthma attacks and other health problems that can be deadly. Smog and Carbon Monoxide can kill.  Stay alert and watch for reports on summer's heat, smog and UV poluantiants.
