Celebrating Caregiver of the Year: How James Goes the Extra Mile Providing Excelptional Home Care Services

December 15, 2022

There’s a reason why caregiving is recognized as one of the noblest careers when it comes to patient care. It requires patience, understanding, and dedication to deliver a level of care that goes above and beyond expectations. Today, we are here to celebrate the story of James, who has been recognized as the “2022 BrightStar Care Caregiver of the Year for the West Region.”

When Ubong-Abasi James met Niles, he made it his mission to find the best approach to ensure a better quality of living for Niles and his family. He made it a point to sit down and understand Niles through the lens of his loved ones, Anna and Sherry. “I can’t express the guilt of knowing I’m so far away and he needs me to be there,” says Sherry, who is Niles’ daughter. It is a common concern for the loved ones of our patients to feel a sense of guilt for not being physically present to take care of their family members. This is where our caregivers and CNA’s step in.

At BrightStar Care of Salt Lake City, we aim to bridge the gap between long-distance family members and their loved ones by providing the quality care that they need. James has been doing an excellent job of understanding Niles and assessing what he needs to improve his quality of life. This is what BrightStar Care is all about: going above and beyond what is required and creating a program centered around empathy and compassion. It is one thing to be skillful, but it is another thing to work from the heart. That is why James has been awarded the 2022 BrightStar Care Caregiver of the Year for the West Region because his level of care goes the extra mile.

“In Nigeria, we view family as everything, so I take care of the people I come in contact with — my father, mother, and relatives — and I look at Mr. K as a dad. That’s what makes the kind of care I give him more meaningful,” says James. We congratulate James and his outstanding approach to caregiving! Keep up the excellent work and continue touching the hearts of our clients every step of the way.

When I first met Niles,

0:07

he had an ailment that would not have guaranteed him

0:13

a good quality of life.

0:15

And so I had to begin figuring out what my best approach would be

0:22

by asking those questions or

0:25

talking with Sherry or Anna who takes care of him every evening as well.

0:30

I can't express the guilt

0:33

of knowing I'm so far away and he needs me so bad.

0:37

He needs me there.

0:38

I know he does. But James, I mean, he's amazing.

0:40

I'd love him to be there 24/7, you know he's just amazing.

0:44

[James laughs]

0:47

When he comes in, in the morning, it's "Good morning, missy.

0:49

Top of the world to you." And Niles and I will smile.

0:53

Niles, he rarely gets out of bed but James is able to.

0:59

And he's dedicated and willing to help him get out of bed

1:02

and was willing to help him have a really great birthday a few months ago.

1:06

Which allowed him to get out of the house and go to his old garage.

1:13

And then he actually got to take a ride in a convertible which was cool.

1:18

You can just see it in his eyes.

1:20

He's engaging and he's willing to go the extra mile.

1:24

It might be the way I was raised.

1:27

Nigeria view family as everything.

1:32

So I take care of the people I come in contact with like

1:36

they're either my own father,

1:41

my own mother

1:42

or any of my relatives.

1:45

And so I look at Mr. K as a dad.

1:50

And that is what makes

1:52

the kind of care I give to them a lot more meaningful.

1:57

BrightStar Care has

2:00

offered me a lot of opportunities and skills

2:06

I would not have found anywhere else.

2:10

James has really been a positive support in the family

2:14

and he's just a good human being.

2:16

[in native language] The goal is to leave Mr. K

2:20

[in native language] better off than how I found him

2:25

I am honored to care for Mr. K.
