Stimulating Games to Help Improve Cognition in Dementia Clients

January 7, 2020
When your loved one develops dementia, his or her cognitive function will likely decline over time as a result of your loved one’s illness. That’s why it’s imperative for caretakers to exercise the senior’s mind by engaging him or her with stimulating activities. Challenging the mind every day helps improve memory, cognitive function, mental health, and overall well-being.

One of the best ways to keep the mind sharp is by playing games! Games are not only a way to have fun and brighten up someone’s day, but they’re also great at challenging seniors to use their imagination, decision-making, and strategy skills. Below, we’ve listed some great games to play with dementia patients.

Trivia

Trivia night is the whole family’s favorite night, elder relatives included. These games are perfect for enhancing memory, as they require players to memorize and quickly recall facts. They can even be personalized by choosing categories or interests that everybody likes. Seniors could even end up becoming the trivia champions!

Board Games

Who doesn’t love board games? Board games are great for stimulating cell growth and neural connections in the brain since they often involve complex thoughts to come up with strategic solutions. A lot of seniors prefer traditional favorites, such as Chess and Checkers, but other options, like Clue or Monopoly, are great too!

Card Games

Card games are awesome at improving several brain functions, including:

Memory
Strategic thinking
Problem-solving skills
Socializing skills
Patience and concentration

One deck of cards is all you need to unlock a whole world of possibilities. Memory match, Go Fish, Poker, Gin Rummy, Bridge, Blackjack, and Solitaire are just some popular card games that are great for improving cognitive function, but there are hundreds of other games to learn and try.
