Fun Ways to Spend St. Patrick’s Day with Your Senior Loved One

March 4, 2017

Deck Yourself in Green

This is a great time for you and your loved one to pull out your favorite green clothes. The outfits can be subtle and serious or crazy and silly. You can top your outfits off with a St. Patrick’s-themed hat, or you can even have fun designing unique holiday hats together.

Enjoy Festive Food

Partaking of some festive food can help brighten your holiday together. You and your loved one can try some traditional Irish fare such as corned beef and cabbage and Irish soda bread or enjoy some fun green desserts like mint ice cream, lime Jell-O, or cupcakes with green frosting. If your loved one enjoys cooking, he or she can help with the preparation of these items as well.

Kick Up Your Heels

If your loved one is up for physical activity, he or she might enjoy some low-key Irish dancing. Put on some traditional Irish music and encourage him or her to do an Irish jig or simply move along to the music. Enthusiasm far outweighs technique and the exercise will be a healthy bonus either way. You may also want to take in a performance from a local school of Irish dance.

Watch a Parade

Several communities across the country sponsor St. Patrick’s Day parades. If there is not a local parade you and your loved one can attend in person, you can likely find one on television and enjoy the festivities from the comfort of home.

Make Decorations

Making a holiday hat isn’t the only way to get creative on St. Patrick’s Day. If your loved one enjoys crafting, he or she can cut out paper shamrocks in various sizes and make a wreath out of them. Your loved one can also create pots of gold or print out Irish blessings and sayings and paste them onto the shamrock cutouts. These can also be taped onto straws and put into a vase.
