Our BSC team here in NYC has been deploying a variety of COVID 19 testing solutions to local businesses and it has been a learning experience for us all.  Here is a quick tip sheet to help understand some of the common testing options available today:

Standard PCR Test - Used to detect the virus’ genetic material. This is a diagnostic test used to confirm active infections and is considered by the CDC to be the gold standard of tests.  The test is generally administered with a nasal swab.

  • Results are slower - tests must be processed at the lab which means public testing facilities quickly get overwhelmed and result times start to vary significantly.  Results can take 2 days to over two weeks

  • High Accuracy - negative results do not need a second test

  • Usually covered by insurance

  • Generally done via a nose or throat swab (though some saliva tests are now available)

Rapid Antigen Test - Also a diagnostic test used to detect active infections but this tests looks for particular proteins on the surface of the virus

  • High speed - results can take minutes and be done on site

  • Less reliable results - while false positives are rare, some sources suggest that as many as half of negative results are false.  Negative results may require additional tests

  • Pain Threshold - this test is available via nasal or throat swab

Antibody Test or Serology Test - This test is not diagnostic and looks for the presence of the virus’ antibodies.  This will establish whether a person has been exposed to the virus which may mean they are less susceptible to reinfection (though the question of immunity is far from settled at this time).

  • Results are fast and usually received on the same day

  • Tests require a blood draw or finger stick
