Karen Abe “There comes a time in everyone’s life when they need a helping hand to overcome the challenges life throws them, and I felt the tools and systems BrightStar Care already had in place would allow my team to provide the highest quality of care to our community” said Karen. “I am incredibly excited about my team's arrival in this area,” as specialists in the rapidly growing healthcare industry, we empower our caregivers to live our values and provide compassionate care and service, anytime, anyplace!  BrightStar of Thousand Oaks provides local residents in Agoura, Calabasas, Conejo Valley, Malibu, Moorpark, Newbury Park, Oak Park, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, West Hills, and Westlake Village with adult and elder home care and childcare, as well as supplemental healthcare staff to corporate clients such as hospitals, rehabs and assisted livings.

How long have you been in Management?
My 30-year career in development and philanthropy includes long-term employment with the United Way and Jewish Federation.

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
I have experience with fundraising, grant making and special events. Additionally, I am certified as a leadership coach and team facilitator.

What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
My greatest motivation at work is to make a lasting impact on the quality o fpeople’s lives.

Christy LaFleur, Director Of Nursing

How long have you been a Nurse?
I have been a Registered Nurse for over 10 years. Along with receiving a Bachelors in Health Science specializing in Administration.
 
What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
I have been a successful RN in surgery for most of my career.  I worked at UCLA and Los Robles aiding patients as they get their surgeries done. I specialized in multiple specialties in the operating room,  but the two that stand out the most was being part of the UCLA Kidney Transplant Team along with being a active member of the Skull Base Institute ( specializing in only brain surgeries) Needless to say,  I have been a successful nurse under stressful situations. 
 
What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I have a great relationships with the local medical facilities and doctors which I feel very blessed for. I like to think I have a solid nursing, people and administrative skills and am focused on expanding upon our learning programs (eg demential care) for our nurses, caregivers and the community.

Sharon O'Hearn, RN,  Assistant Director of Nursing

How long have you been a Nurse?
I have been a Registered Nurse for 43 years and an Orthopedic Nurse for 37 years. I received my bachelor’s degree from Cal State Dominguez Hills and have my Orthopedic Nurses Certification.

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
I have been a successful Registered Nurse for Los Robles Hospital. I leveraged interpersonal communication strengths to establish rapport and build trust with patients and staff alike. I mentored new RN graduates at Los Robles, ensuring proper training was provided to optimize their full potential. I was also a part of the Joint Replacement Team for the hospital.

What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about following my patients from surgery to healing. Being able to work in the home health industry enables me to have intimate contact with patients. It gives me satisfaction having the ability to support them through one of their most challenging life experiences.

Jennifer Fulgentis, Director of Community Relations

How long have you been Director Community Relations?
I have been The Director of Community Relations for BrightStar Conejo Valley for the past 3 years.
 
What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
I received my Bachelor of Science from Cal State Hayward in 1994.  After I graduated from college I was a successful Medical Sales Rep for BEI Medical. I sold surgical instruments to Hospitals and Physicians in the OB/GYN Industry. After 2 years of medical sales I got married, raised two beautiful daughters and worked for Recentis our family owned Re-Insurance Company. After our office closed I joined PurePayments and sold credit card processing services. Shortly after joining PurePayments my Mother became ill, so I worked part-time and started caring for my mother. It became clear to me when I was caring for my mother that I had a passion for working with Seniors. Soon after that I joined BrightStar and my journey to helping Seniors began.

What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
The most enjoyable part of my job is going to the families house for the initial meeting. I love to sit with them and listen to their stories and needs. I do my best to make them feel comfortable and reassure them that I have the staff that can give them the help they need. I always try to be relatable and tell them the story about my journey caring for my aging mother. I’m grateful for my job at BrightStar because I get to help people in need and make a difference in peoples lives.

How long have you been working in Finance?
Since graduating from Geneva University, I have been working in finance and managing companies for my entire career.   In 2016, I moved to California and joined the health sector and have loved working in home health ever since.

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
As a General Manager/CEO and CFO, I have been overseeing payroll, billing and customer service for many years.
 
What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about providing clients and caregivers the best care possible. I do this by ensuring all of our amazing employees are paid on time and our Clients are billed accurately.  I always try to keep a smile, keep it light with a positive attitude.

How long have you been working in Healthcare?
BrightStar Care is my first job in healthcare, I started working here part-time when I was in high-school. It started with just an afterschool job to assist my mother (Karen) with some paperwork, but I now help manage human resources to ensure we are compliant, survey ready and supporting our wonderful staff and Clients.

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
As an administrative assistant, I need to be encouraging with all the people I meet and speak to as well as very organized, which is a skill I have always practiced in everyday life and in difficult classes throughout school.  I previously worked in the service industry and with special needs children, I am good at and enjoy interacting with many different people, and am working towards a future in business administration in college.
 
What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about meeting and interacting with new caregivers and nurses each day.  I also like to deal with new clients as I assist in keeping their plan of cares up to date both online and in their blue logs at home. I enjoy working with experienced, mature yet fun people in the office everyday.

I ensure all the employee and client folders are up-to-date and all of the employees have kept up with their ongoing training, credentials, and certifications. I make it easier for employees to stay on track with their necessary credentials as well as for clients to know that they can trust the people caring for them in terms of licenses, background checks, and important training.

Josie Reyes, Client Care Manager

How long have you been working in the healthfield/CNA (for Josie)?
I have been a CNA for over 10 years. I began work in a physical rehabilitation facility in Santa Barbara then transitioned to senior and home care. In 2010, I joined a home care agency as a CNA then moved into operations utilizing my education and experience and have loved working in home health ever since!

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
I bring a decade of CNA and scheduling experience, plus a lifetime of passion for helping others.

What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about providing clients the best care possible. I do this by  communicating with our wonderful staff, clients, and family members.  Always with a positive attitude!

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
I have extensive babysitting experience, as well as experience from watching over my grandmother when she was diagnosed with Lymphoma. I also worked at a popular Italian restaurant, where our main goal was to treat our customers like family and provide the best service possible which I aim to do at BrightStar Care!
 
What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about being able to make a difference in someone’s life, even if it’s small. There’s nothing more rewarding then to help someone in need…in my job I can help our clients and caregivers.
