Meet Karen Abé, Owner

Karen Abe “There comes a time in everyone’s life when they need a helping hand to overcome the challenges life throws them, and I felt the tools and systems BrightStar Care already had in place would allow my team to provide the highest quality of care to our community” said Karen. “I am incredibly excited about my team's arrival in this area,” as specialists in the rapidly growing healthcare industry, we empower our caregivers to live our values and provide compassionate care and service, anytime, anyplace!  BrightStar of Thousand Oaks provides local residents in Agoura, Calabasas, Conejo Valley, Malibu, Moorpark, Newbury Park, Oak Park, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, West Hills, and Westlake Village with adult and elder home care and childcare, as well as supplemental healthcare staff to corporate clients such as hospitals, rehabs and assisted livings.

How long have you been working in healthcare/management?
I am new to the healthcare management industry.  However, I have had my own personal caregiving experiences with family and am excited to learn all I can about the industry and how I can contribute.

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
The experience I bring to BrightStar Care is over 20 years of professional practice in management, leadership and human resources for other great companies including Starbucks and Disney.

What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about contributing my experiences in a new industry, and being able to make the difference in the lives of our clients.

Sharon O'Hearn, RN,  Assistant Director of Nursing

How long have you been a Nurse?
I have been a Registered Nurse for 43 years and an Orthopedic Nurse for 37 years. I received my bachelor’s degree from Cal State Dominguez Hills and have my Orthopedic Nurses Certification.

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
I have been a successful Registered Nurse for Los Robles Hospital. I leveraged interpersonal communication strengths to establish rapport and build trust with patients and staff alike. I mentored new RN graduates at Los Robles, ensuring proper training was provided to optimize their full potential. I was also a part of the Joint Replacement Team for the hospital.What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about following my patients from surgery to healing. Being able to work in the home health industry enables me to have intimate contact with patients. It gives me satisfaction having the ability to support them through one of their most challenging life experiences.

How long have you been working in healthcare/management?
I’ve been an RN since 2005 and earned my BSN in 2012. 

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
I started in Pediatrics, worked in the ER, ICU, Cardiac Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, and home health, home IV infusions and in office IV infusions. 

What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I love bring a smile to my patient face and making them comfortable when they are at their most venerable.

How long have you been working in Finance?
Since graduating from Geneva University, I have been working in finance and managing companies for my entire career.   In 2016, I moved to California and joined the health sector and have loved working in home health ever since.

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
As a General Manager/CEO and CFO, I have been overseeing payroll, billing and customer service for many years.
 
What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about providing clients and caregivers the best care possible. I do this by ensuring all of our amazing employees are paid on time and our Clients are billed accurately.  I always try to keep a smile, keep it light with a positive attitude.

Josie Reyes, Client Care Manager

How long have you been working in the healthfield/CNA (for Josie)?
I have been a CNA for over 10 years. I began work in a physical rehabilitation facility in Santa Barbara then transitioned to senior and home care. In 2010, I joined a home care agency as a CNA then moved into operations utilizing my education and experience and have loved working in home health ever since!

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
I bring a decade of CNA and scheduling experience, plus a lifetime of passion for helping others.

What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about providing clients the best care possible. I do this by  communicating with our wonderful staff, clients, and family members.  Always with a positive attitude!

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
I have extensive babysitting experience, as well as experience from watching over my grandmother when she was diagnosed with Lymphoma. I also worked at a popular Italian restaurant, where our main goal was to treat our customers like family and provide the best service possible which I aim to do at BrightStar Care!
 
What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about being able to make a difference in someone’s life, even if it’s small. There’s nothing more rewarding then to help someone in need…in my job I can help our clients and caregivers.

How long have you been working in healthcare/management?
I have worked in the healthcare field as a medical scribe and CNA for nearly 2 years at various types of facilities. Having obtained a B.A. in Public Health, I achieve to protect and improve the health of people and their communities. I have volunteered at non-profit organizations, including Monica Uribe Por Amor in Colombia, working with children suffering from Spina Bifida by promoting the integral development of people with spina bifida, seeking their autonomy and social inclusion.

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care? Having worked in the field as a CNA for BrightStar Care for nearly a year, and now transitioning to the office, I feel I am able to comprehensively understand our clients and their needs. Working in the field has allowed to me to better relate to our employees as well.

What aspect of your job are you most passionate about? I am most passionate about the direct quality care we are able to provide to those in need of it. It satisfies me knowing I am able to create a difference in the lives of our clients, whether it is attending to their basic but essential needs, providing comfort, and/or assisting the families during difficult medical situations.

How long have you been working in Healthcare?
BrightStar Care is my first job in healthcare, I started working here part-time when I was in high-school. It started with just an afterschool job to assist my mother (Karen) with some paperwork, but I now help manage human resources to ensure we are compliant, survey ready and supporting our wonderful staff and Clients.

What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care?
As an administrative assistant, I need to be encouraging with all the people I meet and speak to as well as very organized, which is a skill I have always practiced in everyday life and in difficult classes throughout school.  I previously worked in the service industry and with special needs children, I am good at and enjoy interacting with many different people, and am working towards a future in business administration in college.
 
What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about meeting and interacting with new caregivers and nurses each day.  I also like to deal with new clients as I assist in keeping their plan of cares up to date both online and in their blue logs at home. I enjoy working with experienced, mature yet fun people in the office everyday.

I ensure all the employee and client folders are up-to-date and all of the employees have kept up with their ongoing training, credentials, and certifications. I make it easier for employees to stay on track with their necessary credentials as well as for clients to know that they can trust the people caring for them in terms of licenses, background checks, and important training.
