Austin Seniors Send Care Packages to Troops Overseas

August 11, 2018

A Group of Austin Seniors is Helping to Brighten the Lives of Thousands of Troops Overseas

Spectrum News highlighted Austin Seniors' support for the military.  Seniors who are veterans know how a care package can brighten the day of our service men and women abroad.  At the North Austin Senior Living Center, Buckner Villas, residents put together care packages to support military members stationed overseas.

Buckner Villas resident Clay Kennedy, a retired Air Force chaplain, served in the military for nearly 30 years. Kennedy says, "There are times when you're away from home that you sometimes wonder - have I been forgotten? So those little items - it's just a good experience to receive something from people that says we're proud of what you're doing for our country...I'm saying to them here's a brother in arms that understands the sacrifice you're making for me."

The senior residents collected items including ChapStick, dental floss, and gum. Many seniors included hand-written letters, expressing their appreciation for the service men and women.

One senior resident, who was a former military wife, said, “I know how much my husband and son enjoyed letters and cards and care packages.”
