1. Locate a helpful exercise or balance class. Key elements of the program should include: rebuilding muscle strength, balance, as well as flexibility.

2. Home safety check is the first step. Clear pathways throughout your entire house, making sure to remove anything that you may trip over. Set up your house so the lighting is bright so you can see clearly. If you have stairs, install railing so that you have secure safety guards. If needed, install safety rails in other locations around your house if extra safety precaution is needed.

3. Maintain open communication with family members and nearby friends. Never fear asking for help or advice. Falling is not always just a problem for Austin seniors.

4.  Healthy communications with your doctor is always important. Talk to him/her about your falling concerns, whether you have a history of falling, or any worries you may have for future.

5. Make regular doctor visits to have your eyesight and hearing checked, as having sound sight and hearing is vital to maintaining balance.

6. Keep an ongoing evaluation of which medications you are on, keeping your primary health care provider included, keeping a watchful eye on whether anything you may be taking could be the reason for consistent falling or imbalance. Always remember to not self medicate, but to only take what your doctor prescribes you.
