Caregivers at Brightstar Care Greenville-Spartanburg are all trained in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). We never know when they will need it. Caregiver Lalancia Cowan needed it very soon after she was certified. Just a month and a half after learning CPR, she was driving to work and witnessed a car wreck on Laurens Road in Greenville.
The driver ahead of her ran another driver off the road and the car hit a street light. Smoke began pouring from the car. A woman and her 8 month old baby were in that car and the baby was hurt. When the mother carried the baby outside the car, Lalancia could see he was not breathing. She explained to the mother that she is trained in CPR and asked for permission to help, which the mother granted. Lalancia placed a blanket on the ground and laid the baby on top. She tickled the baby’s foot and it did not move. She noted that his chest was not rising and falling and began 30 chest compressions with two fingers, breathed twice into the baby and resumed chest compressions. After the 25th chest compression on the second round, the baby coughed. The baby resumed breathing on his own. While Lalancia was performing CPR, another motorist called for an ambulance. Lalancia resumed her drive to work.
It’s empowering to be trained to know what to do when someone needs help and we’re happy that Lalancia was trained and ready. Thanks, Lalancia, for all you do.
