National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March 20, 2024

Screening for colorectal cancer can seem daunting. But don’t make that thought a reason for avoiding screening. As unimaginable as it is to think about cancer, millions of people die from it around the globe each year. And the number will keep growing. Being weary of the test may make you a statistic. If you are above the age of 45, your chances of obtaining cancer go up.

Mayo Clinic lists many options for testing

The first option is the one most thought about. It is a colonoscopy. This is an uncomfortable procedure, but it is out-patient. So, you go home the same day. It involves cleaning out your system the night before for a clear view of your gut. The test itself takes 30 to 60 minutes, and you are given something for relaxation. It is over before you know it. Some biopsies may be taken but it is not really felt due to sedation. It is better to have peace of mind when you get the results. If there is a positive result, early detection can provide the optimal treatment for longevity. Don’t forget to ask your insurance company approximate costs prior to the day to prevent any surprise charges. If the hospital asks for mandatory payment upfront, insist on putting it through your insurance first. I learned that the hard way. You are not required to pay anything up front. You will also need a driver due to the sedation that is given.

The second option is a stool test. There is no prep or sedation with this method, but it is less accurate than colonoscopy. The cost will be less as well. There is obviously no driver necessary, so it can be done independently. If results are positive, more tests may be required.

There are two other options that are less common, but your doctor will decide what test may be best for you based on your medical history and risk factors.
