A Can’t-Miss Opportunity

Lifelong learners looking to embrace new opportunities and become more educated in nursing and healthcare will find plenty to learn and do at the CNA Symposium.

Activities

This symposium has been carefully planned to benefit each nurse in attendance, providing an opportunity to increase knowledge and skills. It is free to active CNAs and student CNAs, and registration includes breakfast, lunch, and materials. During the symposium, those in attendance will receive a certificate of completion, after getting the chance to:
  • Engage in educational breakout sessions
  • Tour the Health and Science Center at College of DuPage
  • Visit Clinical partner exhibits and tables

Why CNA Training is Important

Certified Nurse Assistants are always in demand, and as the need for healthcare jobs grow, so will the need for highly motivated, well-educated CNAs. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment for CNAs will grow by more than 11 percent between 2016 and 2025, which means adding more than 2.4 million new CNA jobs to the market. The Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program at College of DuPage uses a combination of classroom and clinical education to prepare students to become CNAs, providing excellent patient care to patients in Illinois. For those wishing to go further, CNA training provides an excellent foundation for continued education and a career in nursing. College DuPage is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is the largest public community college in the state of Illinois.

Topics

This year’s symposium will offer a variety of topics, including:
  • Dementia care
  • Palliative care
  • Music therapy
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Healthcare in 2030
Attendees will also gain knowledge and skills to promote best practices in communication, geriatric care, and other healthcare related topics. In addition to having the opportunity to explore the labs and simulation centers, they will have the opportunity to meet healthcare representatives from DuPage Care Center, Monarch Landing, NorthShore EEH, Northwestern Medicine-CDH, RML, St. Patrick’s Residence, Terra Vista of Oakbrook Terrance, and UChicago Medicine Advent Health.

Keynote Speaker

The keynote speaker at this year’s symposium will be Jim Benté, Vice President of Planning & Institutional Effectiveness - College of DuPage (Retired). Currently serving as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Health Systems at Carnegie Mellon University, Jim Benté has a strong background in nursing and education. In his session, he will examine and apply the writings and philosophies of experts like Laurie Beth Jones and Viktor Frankl, among others, looking at what a health care professional needs to be successful and empowered.
