Zumba Gold is a variation on the popular dance exercise program, designed for older adults and good for both body and brain.

About the Event
The popular Zumba workout, which puts a mix of high- and lower-intensity dance moves to Latin and World beats, has been modified in Zumba Gold to provide a less intensive, more joint-friendly dance workout for older adults - without sacrificing any of the fun.

This class, part of a series taught by Charlotte, N.C., fitness instructor Elizabeth Moakler, will get you moving to the Zumba rhythms and explore the connection between dance and a healthy brain.

In addition to delivering cardiovascular and muscle-strengthening benefits, regular aerobic exercise has been shown to contribute to brain health and aid memory and focus. Please consult your physician before beginning any new exercise regimen.

Gladys McGarey: The Well Lived Life
April 6th, 2024
4:00 to 6:00PM MST

"Centenarian Dr. Gladys McGarey shares her book, filled with life-changing secrets for how to live with joy, vitality, and purpose at any age. In conversation with Rita Davenport.

ABOUT THE LIVE EVENT
Ticket purchase (includes book) via Eventbrite is required.
All tickets are general admission.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Dr. Gladys McGarey, a centenarian still-consulting doctor and the mother of holistic medicine, reveals “a story that teaches as much as it inspires” (Edith Eger, New York Times bestselling author), filled with life-changing secrets for how to live with joy, vitality, and purpose at any age.

Dr. Gladys McGarey, cofounder of the American Holistic Medical Association, began her medical practice at a time when women couldn’t even have their own bank accounts. Over the past sixty years, she has pioneered a new way of thinking about disease and health that has transformed the way we imagine health care and self-care around the world.

On these pages, Dr. McGarey shares her six actionable secrets to enjoying lives that are long, happy, and purpose-driven:

-Spend your energy wildly: How to embrace your life fully and feel motivated every day.
-All life needs to move: How to move—spiritually, mentally, and physically—to help let go of trauma and other roadblocks.
-You are here for a reason: How to find the everyday “juice” that helps you stay oriented in your life’s purpose.
-You are never alone: How to build a community that’s meaningful to you.
-Everything is your teacher: Discover the deep learnings that come from pain and setbacks.
-Love is the most powerful medicine: Learn to love yourself—and others—into healing.

In a voice that is both practical and inspiring, Dr. McGarey shares her own extraordinary stories and eternal wisdom—from her early childhood in India and a chance encounter with Mahatma Gandhi to her life as a physician and a mother of six, to her survival of both heartbreak and illness. Dr. Gladys shares her inspiring vision for a healthier and more joyful future for us all, filled with “rich and complex truths that will resonate with readers’ hearts and minds” (Dr. Robert Waldinger, New York Times bestselling author)."

SATURDAY AFTERNOON (APRIL 13TH) at 1:00 PM our amazing Who I Am Foundation volunteers in #Phoenix will be going back to play Games, Art, and Jewelry Making with the residents of Ventana Winds Retirement Home!

Ventana Winds Retirement Home is located at 12322 N 113th Ave, Youngtown, AZ 85363

Children are welcome and encouraged to participate!

Whether young or old, games connect us with those around us in an entertaining and meaningful way.

Playing games is not just for children. It’s a fun, engaging, and stress relieving activity that should be practiced by all of us, even in old age. Seniors can experience a number of benefits depending on the type of game being played. The advantages can range anywhere from a sharper memory to better fine motor skills.

Playing games also encourages interaction with others, exercise the brain, reduces the risk of cognitive decline, and creates more happiness.

The consistency of seeing other people prevents isolation and loneliness, which are both so common among the elderly population.

Four award winning local chefs are partnering with nutrition experts and researchers from across Phoenix to deliver a four-course meal and cocktails that integrate the latest research in dietetics and nutrition with fine culinary style. This community event will be under the stars in Downtown Phoenix at the home of the Downtown Phoenix Farmer’s Market. All proceeds will go 100% to the Downtown Phoenix Farmer’s Market, which supports more than 100 local vendors on a weekly basis in the heart of Downtown Phoenix.

What to expect:
The program will begin at 6:00 PM with a community happy hour and live entertainment with the dinner commencing at 6:45 PM

Guests will sit in tables of 10 and be accompanied by a nutrition coach, a student from ASU, NAU, University of Arizona or Maricopa Community College who will guide you through each dish and be there to answer any questions. These students are studying to serve our community as health professionals, so this coaching experience will provide a great learning opportunity about translating research and science to the real world. Bring a friend or your organization for an event you will not want to miss!

As mentioned, all ticket sales and sponsorship proceeds will go to Community Food Connections, which organizes the Downtown Phoenix Farmer’s Market. If you are interested in purchasing a table for your group or organization, or if you would like to sponsor the program, please contact Samantha Jackson samj@communityfoodconnections.org

Caring for a Veteran

November 8th, 2023
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

When you become a caregiver for a U.S. veteran, chances are you will start younger and care longer. You’ll manage situations other family caregivers don’t necessarily deal with. Some 5.5 million caregivers are caring for wounded warriors today, making it easier for them to live independently in their homes and communities for as long as possible.  No matter where you are on your family’s caregiving journey, having a good road map will make the process a little bit easier. Troy J. Broussard, Senior Advisor for AARP's Veterans & Military Families Initiative and a proud Desert Storm Army veteran, will provide information and resources specifically aimed at supporting veteran and military caregivers. These include AARP’s free Military Caregiving Guide for Veterans, Service Members, and their Families and the Veterans and Military Families Health Benefits Navigator, which contain important information to help caregivers make decisions and find available service-related health benefits.
