Interview with a Veteran

Serving Those Who Served

We consider it to be the highest honor to care for veterans by supporting their independence and dignity. We come into their homes to assist with meals, mobility, errands and more; but we are the ones who are blessed by the stories they share and the love they have for our country. We interviewed one of our many veteran clients, Terry. Read below for his inspiring words:

Could you share some details about your military service, such as your branch, rank, and any significant experiences or memories from your time in the military?

I served in the Army in 1970 and 1971. I was 18 at the time and had attended Rochester Community College, but I was not ready for college at this time. I was looking for an adventure so I joined the Army! I was sent to Infantry School and on to Airborne training and ended up in the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam. I served almost a year in Vietnam and I ended up serving the last months in Fitzsimons Hospital in Denver, Colorado, as a patient. I had achieved the rank of E4, which is a corporal.

Veterans Day is dedicated to honoring and recognizing the service and sacrifices of military personnel. What does Veterans Day mean to you personally, especially as someone who has experienced military service?

I have a deep appreciation for veterans and first responders! I never expected to be recognized for my service because I volunteered to go. Most veterans I know don't need recognition.

For other veterans who may be considering in-home health care, what advice or insights would you offer based on your own experience?

I have had several different in-home caregiver companies, but BrightStar Care is the only company that has sent a caregiver every single day! If consistent in-home healthcare is important to you, then BrightStar Care should be at the top of your list.

Your military service instilled a sense of dedication to service. How do you see that dedication reflected in the care you receive from our in-home health care professionals?

Yes, the caregiver whom BrightStar Care [currently] sends to my home consistently is great; but when I first switched to BrightStar Care, they also sent caregivers to my home that were caring, compassionate, consistent, and happy with BrightStar Care.

In what ways have you found the care you receive from our company to be in line with the values and principles you learned during your time in the military?

BrightStar Care of Santa Barbara County is a great company that reflects the values and principles of its owners, Sharon and Michael Perez. I believe that great companies have great leaders and BrightStar Care has great leaders from the top down and I would enthusiastically endorse them!

In this month of “thanksgiving,” we are thankful for the profound dedication and sacrifices made by our military personnel. In our interview with our client, we’ve heard a story of service, adventure, and a commitment to consistency, both in the military and throughout his in-home healthcare journey.

We are grateful for Terry’s service and inspired by his insights on the importance of recognizing the value of caregivers and the consistency that BrightStar brings to his life. The values and principles instilled in our client during his military service dovetail with the dedication and care provided by our team at BrightStar of Santa Barbara County.

Together, we stand to honor all veterans and pledge to continue delivering exceptional, consistent care to those who have served our country and beyond.
