Phoenix Home Care Helps Autistic Children with Autism In A Playful Way

Sesame Street' Introduces Family of Julia – A 4-year-old Muppet With Autism

Due to new corporate sponsorships from Sesame Street, families with autistic children can learn how to deal with the disease in a playful way. Still, the adoption might be stereotypical, and the individual behavior of your loved one could be totally different.

Julia, the first muppet with autism to reside in PBS Kids' famous neighborhood, debuted on the official "Sesame Street" program in 2017, according to the show.

This April, Sesame Workshop – the nonprofit organization associated with "Sesame Street" – is presenting Julia's family in an effort to "focus on what all families share in common" and highlight resources available that deal with "everyday" challenges as well as problems like bullying – something children with autism are more likely to experience than their non-autistic peers.

“We’re thrilled to expand Julia’s world with her parents, big brother, and her adorable dog, Rose, in our new resources,” Sherrie Westin, president of global impact and philanthropy at Sesame Workshop, said in a statement. “Children with autism often face unique challenges, as do their parents and siblings. But every family faces challenges of some sort, which is why we are focusing on what all families have in common. In a family, everyone has different roles, challenges, and strengths, and everyone can learn from one another.”

Sesame Workshop this week unveiled new videos and materials in English and Spanish as part of its "Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children" initiative. Complementing the venture, HBO and PBS Kids will air a "Sesame Street" episode next Monday in which Elmo, Abby Cadabby, and Alan help Julia feel less worried about her first haircut – a common experience that can be difficult for children with autism.

Autism affects about 1 in 59 children in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"While it’s true there can be significant differences between people with autism and their peers, all children want the same things: to feel safe, happy, and loved," Sesame Workshop's autism initiative website says. "And all children have something to contribute – unique perspectives and talents that help make the world a richer and more interesting place."

Julia also is starring in a campaign by advocacy organization Autism Speaks and the Ad Council aimed at raising awareness about the importance of early screening for autism.
The campaign features resources in English and Spanish, and Julia will be featured in some ads as part of a collaboration with Sesame Workshop.

“We are committed to creating a more inclusive world for people with autism, and that starts with early screening and timely intervention so that people with autism can live their fullest lives," Autism Speaks President and CEO Angela Geiger said in a statement. “With this new campaign, we hope to give families the tools they need to identify early signs, feel empowered to get their children screened and seek support if they need it.”
