October 1, 2026

At BrightStar Care of Bel Air, we spend our days with families across Bel Air, Fallston, Forest Hill, Abingdon, Churchville, Jarrettsville, Edgewood, and the surrounding communities. We know the best outing isn't always the biggest one. It's the one that fits your loved one's energy, interests, and comfort level.

So we put together a curated list of fall activities for seniors in Bel Air and Harford County, plus a few "go whenever the weather is beautiful" ideas. Look for our BrightStar Senior-Friendly Pick label on events with features like free shuttles or trolleys, accessible facilities, short time commitments, or activities you can enjoy without a lot of walking.

Event details are based on organizer listings as of October 1, 2026. Schedules can change, so please confirm with the organizer before heading out.

Go Whenever the Weather Is Beautiful: Flexible Fall Outings

Not every good day can be planned weeks ahead. Energy, health, and weather all play a part, so here are a few outings that don't depend on a specific date.

Visit a pumpkin patch or farm market

Jones Family Farm in Edgewood runs its pumpkin patch October 1–31, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with u-pick pumpkins, a corn maze, and weekend hayrides from noon to 5 p.m. If walking the fields is too much, you can still pick from the pumpkins on display and enjoy the fall atmosphere. The farm suggests calling ahead on rainy days.

Stop by a family orchard

Lohr's Orchard has been a Harford County tradition since 1928. Its Route 22 retail stand on Churchville Road is open seven days a week, with local produce, fresh-baked pies, and cider in season. It's an easy, low-key stop that doesn't require committing to a festival.

Planning a drive north? Shaw Orchards on the Mason-Dixon Line lost much of its apple crop to an April freeze, and it has announced no more pick-your-own apples this season. Its farm market is still carrying apples as available, so check the website before you go.

Don't overlook fall foliage

This may be the most meaningful outing of all, because it costs nothing and works well for loved ones with significant mobility limitations. Visit Harford notes that the county's color typically peaks in mid-October, with the second and third weeks as the best time to go.

  • Scenic drive: Route 136 through Rocks State Park lets you enjoy the color without leaving the car.

  • Short stroll: The Ma & Pa Heritage Trail in Bel Air winds through woods and meadow on a mix of paved and gravel surfaces. Walk as far as feels good, then turn around.

  • Country roads: A slow drive through northern Harford County, with a stop for coffee or cider, can be just as memorable as any festival.

Tips for a Comfortable, Enjoyable Outing

A little planning goes a long way toward making the day feel good for everyone.

  1. Let your loved one help choose. Ask what sounds fun. A sense of choice makes the outing feel like theirs.

  2. Pick the right time of day. Many older adults have more energy in the late morning or early afternoon. Avoid peak crowd times when you can.

  3. Plan for rest. Bring a folding chair or identify benches and shaded spots ahead of time.

  4. Dress in layers. Fall mornings can start chilly and warm up quickly.

  5. Pack the essentials. Water, snacks, any needed medications, and a phone charger.

  6. Check parking and access. Look for shuttles, trolleys, or accessible parking (several of our Senior-Friendly Picks offer them).

  7. Have an easy exit plan. Leaving early isn't a failure. The goal is connection, not completing an itinerary.

When Family Caregivers Need a Little Support Too

For many families, the person planning the outing is also the person handling meals, appointments, medications, and everything in between. That's a lot, and it can make even a simple afternoon out feel out of reach.

That's where BrightStar Care of Bel Air can help. As a Joint Commission-accredited agency, we hold ourselves to what we call A Higher Standard, and every client's care is overseen by a Registered Nurse who helps build and update a personalized care plan. Our respite care gives family caregivers time to rest, run errands, or simply enjoy the season themselves, knowing their loved one is in good hands. For families navigating memory loss, our Alzheimer's and dementia care focuses on comfort, routine, and meaningful engagement. And when needs grow, our 24/7 care provides around-the-clock support at home.

You don't need to have everything figured out before you call. A conversation is a good first step.

Make This Fall One to Remember

The best fall memories rarely come from perfect plans. They come from showing up together: a warm cider at the farmers' market, a slow drive under the changing leaves, or a grandchild's first trick-or-treat with Grandma by their side.

If caregiving responsibilities are making those moments harder to come by, we're here to help.
