What is the Cost of Assisted Living?

There are many different factors to consider when choosing an assisted living community. Is it close to family and friends? Does it have the amenities and services you or your loved ones need? What fees can you expect? We'll briefly go over what assisted living is, discuss what could be included in the cost of assisted living and ways you may be able to pay for this type of care.

What is Assisted Living?

Assisted living offers residents round-the-clock access to support. Residents may need help with activities of daily living (ADLs), medication management and other simple medical care. Those in assisted living communities often enjoy a range of services such as dining, housekeeping, transportation and more. What is Included in the Cost of Assisted Living?

The average cost of assisted living will not only vary by state, but it also varies by city and the included amenities.

Most properties have a community fee that is non-refundable, which is part of the contract you’ll sign. Some community contracts include activities or services that you may be able to opt into or out of based on your needs and interests. If suite sizes and amenities vary within the community, a specific suite may include a premium price.

Rent at most senior living communities usually includes three meals, activities, some programming and utility bills. Care, medication and supplies related to care (like incontinence products) are your responsibility. The community may charge a fee to cover the assistance and administration of medications, even though actual medications may be paid for by you or your insurance carrier.

Every assisted living facility will have a different pricing structure, so it is important to know precisely what you will be paying for. There may be fees associated with departing the community for specific reasons.

Cost Savings When Choosing Assisted Living

Although there are expenses associated with dwelling in an assisted living community, there are also cost savings. Items such as lawn and snow care, major home repairs, utilities and property taxes are eliminated from your budget. The majority of grocery costs may be covered as part of your meal plan, minimizing your food bill. Be sure to clarify who is responsible for payment of Wi-Fi, cable television and streaming services.

Many special events and entertainment expenses are also included. And there’s the comfort of trained professionals on-site providing care and support around the clock — reassurance that is priceless.

How to Pay for Assisted Living Costs

As you plan for assisted living, what current resources do you have at your disposal for paying for senior care? Some assisted living facilities offer methods of payment you may qualify for. A few sources of funds and/or financial assistance include:

  • Retirement savings or investments
  • Personal or family funds
  • Veterans Affairs Aid and Attendance Benefits (for you or a family member)
  • Long-term care insurance policy
